Overpowered by the sun

We intended to produce a series of cyanotype photographs as a low-tech method to document the more-than-human elements shaping the landscape, so we brought a printing kit with us from the Netherlands. As relative beginners with this technique, we diligently followed the instructions provided by the Dutch maker of the kit.

When developing our initial print run, all rinsed papers turned almost solid blue. Almost all of the intricate shapes and textures from the materials we had placed on the photosensitive paper had vanished. The power of the midday sun had fully exposed the entire paper.

Driven by an urge to find out what could have caused this failure, we gave it another try on the following day. This time, the prints turned out perfectly! The secret? Reducing the exposure time to less than 30% of the length indicated in the instructions. The Spanish sun was simply too powerful for Dutch standards.

In places where (natural) clouds are rare and the sun intensity is exceptionally high, mega computing infrastructures are faced with conflicting conditions. While an abundance of sunshine brings with it a significant potential for renewable energy generation through solar or wind power, it also produces tremendous heat and drought, which can make a territory unliveable over time; especially if the already scarce water resources are further exploited to provide vital cooling for overheated computer chips.

My newest academic article is now out in Media International Australia.

Based on the ‘extended-mixed methods’ model developed by Janet Fulton and others, my paper looks at the role podcasting can play in communicating palaeontology, and science more generally.

I completed the study mostly through actual podcast production (Fossils and Fiction) so in part I was trying to demonstrate production-as-method alongside personal interest in getting more acquainted with the field of palaeontology. The paper spends time evidencing the creative research approach, but ironically I’ve now had it confirmed that my podcast will not be counted as a creative research output because in the view of the Creative Works Assessment Panel:

Travis’s role in production is largely technical (audio mixing/production, creation and administration of social media, etc.), and therefore the podcast as a series could not be considered eligible for creative works
assessment

Still, I’m proud of the three years of production work, collaboration, and effort that I’ve put into this project, and pleased to see it published in Australia’s leading communication journal.

Thanks to reviewers, collaborators, guests, and many others who’ve offered advice and support in this project. More pages from #PaulGoodman's #GrowingUpAbsurd. These pages deal with #Colleges and #Research. There is something reassuring, when you have nagging doubts about something being wrong, to read something from decades ago and see that other people have been noticing absurd trends. Now that people are going into debt to attend college the corruption of the institution away from teaching and toward #CreativeResearch has become an even greater moral issue, I suppose.
