I finally got this quilt top finished. It's hard to see from the photo, but five of the squares, randomly "sprinkled" around, have crazy quilt style embroidery on them. The sashing is all denim. Now to figure out what kind of material to use for the borders and the back.

"Crazy Quilt," Louisa Joiner, 1887-1900.

Unlike many other quilts, crazy quilts are not built around any specific pattern; you take the scraps you have and fit them together in any way that you can make work. While economical (using up the scraps that might have otherwise been discarded), it's also labor-intensive. Some of the pieces have been embroidered as well, and the quilter embroidered her initials on a piece in the lower right.

Little is known about Joiner, other than her husband was a captain who sailed the Great Lakes.

Getting to be time for a quilt on my bed....although it may be a little while yet...

I periodically sort through my leftovers - excess beads from a project, some a bit wonky, experiments, etc. - and stitch together a complete necklace or bracelet. I also sewed a lot of knits for my littles and I'm just getting back to using a few knits. I want to make myself #SportsBras, which at least, uses a small amount of fabric. I learned how to copy existing clothing to draft patterns, so I'm on my way. Also thinking of using some smaller scraps for a #CrazyQuilt or some appliqué. Still too many garments to learn how to sew properly first. I did make sleep shorts for my younger grand.

Images from a well-worn #CrazyQuilt that I grabbed at the Goodwill Bins yesterday. No labels to help discern its age, save the possible “60,” tho the presence of a swastika (as a design element, not a political statement) puts it pre 1960 I would think. #Quilting #Thrifted #Embroidery
