"Down by the River" is a song composed by #NeilYoung. It was first released on his 1969 album with #CrazyHorse, #EverybodyKnowsThisIsNowhere. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album #Decade, stating that he wrote "Down by the River", "#CinnamonGirl" and "#CowgirlInTheSand" while delirious in bed in #TopangaCanyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Ragged Glory, 1990 on Reprise

Ragged Glory was the 20th Neil Young studio album and the sixth with Crazy Horse. This is the height of Young as garage rocker, perhaps inspired by the grunge movement – Rolling Stone voted it 36th best grunge album of all time!

My copy is the “Smell the Horse” 3xLP edition from 2024 pressed by Record Industry in the Netherlands. This is a remaster of the original plus an additional 4 tracks discovered in the process of that remaster.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the second studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released in May 1969 on Reprise Records, catalogue number RS 6349. His first with longtime backing band Crazy Horse, it emerged as a sleeper hit amid Young's contemporaneous success with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young..

Upon its release, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere received generally favorable reviews from critics. Bruce Miroff of Rolling Stone wrote a favorable review, describing Young's voice as "perpetually mournful, without being maudlin or pathetic. It hints at a world in which sorrow underlies everything [...] because that world is recognizable to most of us, Young's singing is often strangely moving." - Wikipedia

Neil Young, Crazy Horse, Barn, 2021 on Reprise

Young’s first post-covid album, recorded in an old (1870s?) barn in Colorado with Nils Lofgren, Billy Talbot, and Ralph Molina. I like the way it is credited and titled – just three nouns: Neil Young, Crazy Horse, Barn.

I love Neil Young and really enjoyed new music from him with Crazy Horse, even if this is a bit quieter than their usual outings.

My copy—via a private sale—is the “special edition” that came with six postcard photos of the Barn sessions.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Rust Never Sleeps, 1979 on Reprise

Tenth Neil Young LP and third with Crazy Horse. Mixture of live performances with overdubs and recordings done live in studio. There was a tour also called “Rust Never Sleeps.”

Great collection of songs, bookended by “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” – with “Powderfinger,” “Pocahontas,” and “Thrasher” (among others) in between.

My copy—via Crossroads Records in Portland OR—is a Los Angeles pressing on orange Reprise labels, unfortunately sans printed lyrics insert but with original inner sleeve.
