Since returning from Boston, I’ve pretty much been asleep for two straight days, only waking up to piss and to add new names to my enemies list.

Probably gonna take a few more days for my body to reset to island time, but luckily I’ve got nothing BUT time, and a shitload of records to get through.

This is a perfect late-night choice.

I’ve always fallen on the Son Volt side of the “versus Wilco” argument. I lost ALL interest in the latter band after they jettisoned Jay Bennett. Without him, they were NOT for me.

Jay FARRAR’s body of work on the other hand, never waivered for me. I’ve always preferred his style and delivery of song FAR more than Tweedy’s, particularly on Trace and THIS album.

This took me a long time to get a vinyl copy of, and I was SIKED to find it in Massholia.

Sadao Watanabe, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous, Jack DeJohnette - Round Trip

Nice cheap bin find from àn international #jazz quartet. Some #FreeJazz and #EuropeanImprovisation foundations that remind me most of Corea’s Sundance album from around the same time. #vinyl @vinylrecords #CrateDigging #NowPlaying

Another cool and interesting find during “the big dig” in Boston (locals of a certain age will appreciate that joke). 😂

Last post, I mentioned the weirder, more obscure bands that appeared on SST, and N.Y.’s Das Damen definitely fit that distinction.

However, it’s not the bands sound or approach that is weird or obscure. In fact, for being on SST, they were kind of a more straightforward alternative rock band, which really wasn’t SST’s thing. When you compare it to some other SST fare, it sticks out.

Really fun album, and it would be their second and final record for SST, jumping to Twin/Tone for the third, and City Slang for their fourth and final.

Some trippy cool psychedelic guitars in some spots, phasey ones in others, but a pretty cool record, and a TEST press to boot!

SCREAMING BROCCOLI
Screaming Broccoli

BY FAR my favorite find of the Boston trip.

Screaming Broccoli did not break through. However, in New England, they are absolute LEGENDS.

Hailing from Vermont, they were compared to some of the more obscure bands on SST in the late ‘80s.
They were #punk #newwave & rock n roll, and this self titled album was their only full-length record, anchored by the regional classic “Let’s Bury Bob”.

There isn’t a lot of information to be found on them online, but if you were a New Englander in the late #80s & a historian of the regional NE scene, you remember them very well.

This was a special find for me, and I’m honored to take such a wonderful slice of my area’s musical history all the way back to the West Coast of Canada.

Such a great record.
