So, the lease on my 2023 VW id4 Pro is expiring next month & I'm looking for another car to replace it by trolling the ads on Cragislist but . . .
The weird thing is . . . I 've sent a couple of emails & texts to purported sellers to ask about the cars they have listed but have gotten absolutely no response whatsoever to my inquiries. 🤷♂️
Are there people who place fake ads on Craigslist with no intention of actually selling anything? 🤔
Wow, do I have to ditch Craigslist now? It's gotten unproductive lately in terms of sales, but now they want me to give them my phone number in order to post an ad for a used box scraper (a $300 farm implement, ffs).

There's no option for email verification. So, they can fuck straight off.

There are several platforms you can use instead of Facebook Marketplace:
eBay – about 180 million monthly users worldwide; a classic site for both new and used items.
Craigslist – roughly 80 million listings per month; great for local, no‑fee classifieds.
Nextdoor – over 90 million monthly users (mostly U.S.); listings are posted in neighborhood‑specific groups and accounts are address‑verified.
There was OpenBazaar as an ethical, fully open‑source alternative, but the project shut down🙁. I still hope for a successor, or a FOSS buy‑sell‑trade community‑driven option to emerge.

In all the hullabaloo about #digitalsovereignty , I'm surprised that I haven't heard proposals for public (or even shared) directory services to break away from #WalledGardens and make it easier to share information about resources like groups, forums, events, etc.
I cringe every time I see a small business or NGO share an Instagram, TicToc or Facebook address (don't get me started about What'sApp) just because:
- it's easy
- uses an existing login
- makes them discoverable
#europe in particular should know better because some postal agencies already operate identity and payment services.
Since governments tend to be late adopters, I have to wonder if #fediverse friendly companies like #craigslist might consider offering services to APIs the way they do for people.
Someone please tell me this is already a thing and I just need to get out more.
