A perfect cycle of life: organic material composed of #cowdung (rich in nitrogen), #straw and #leaves (providing carbon), and enriched with basic silicate volcanic rock dust. Nature's cycle: First of all, coprophages, i.e. creatures that eat excrement, feed on the patties. These in turn are on the menu of predatory dipterans, such as the yellow dung beetle. Dung beetles dig tunnels for their offspring, which serve as prey for spiders and predatory beetles. Birds are also keen on dung: great grey shrikes, swallows and starlings, among others, live on plant seeds stuck in cow dung. Birds of prey then like to snatch up the well-fed birds and lizards. If the patties disappear, there is no basis for this cycle.

Big clean-up: When there is not much left to pick up, fungi, bacteria, mites, springtails, earthworms and millipedes complete the work of decomposition. After two to three months, they have transported all the organic substances that were still present into the soil. This fertilizes the grasses and flowers, which are then eaten by the cattle, only to end up as manure on the pasture again soon afterwards.
