Masks, Misinformation, and Making Do
Appalachian Health-Care Workers
and the COVID-19 Pandemic
This volume comprises the COVID-19 pandemic experiences of Appalachian health-care workers, including frontline providers, administrators, and educators. The combined narrative reveals how governmental and corporate policies exacerbated the region’s injustices, stymied response efforts, and increased the death toll.
Despite the Appalachian focus, I think anybody paying attention would recognise many of the experiences, written early in this pandemic, when everything was still fresh, and the cloak of denial had yet to descend.
I really appreciated reading this mixture of detailed personal history and academic essay.

@filmfreak75 @autismunicorn @autistics The only truly tough problem I've ever had with being lonely has been a lack of hugs to be honest 😂
I've hardly left the house this decade (to my knowledge I'm not immunocompromised but between my anxiety, sensory issues, and awareness that #CovidIsNotOver I've been acting as if I am!), but this hasn't been a problem because I have my (also autistic, also likes deep pressure) partner and, by implication, I have about as many hugs as our mutual heat sensitivity allows 🤣 #ActuallyAusquishtic

First the government opened the borders; let it rip, told us to live with it, and now they're taking free RATs away from those who can least afford it. The affordable RAT option from pharmacies that they mention - $7.99 for a single.
It's lot to pay when you are already stretching your budget to afford fuel to get to your job and food for basic survival.
Not to mention going into a pharmacy where there's a nice old dear topping up her angina medication where she'll probably get infected. Though I guess most people do that anyway
All we can do, IME, is take our own precautions.
I know of seniors in the UK who don't wear masks, refuse various vaccines, but also mix at a variety of churches and community centres.
It's a very tricky balance for carers and people who have vulnerable health issues. Fortunately no-one challenges me wearing a mask on public transport and in shops. Also, I do see a few others doing the same.
Good luck, stay safe.
