A warning to people retiring in California. If you are offered a Medi-Cal benefit in addition to being on Medicare, and you have a spouse still on Covered California, do not submit that Medi-Cal application.

They based their income calculation on how much money I withdrew from my IRA in February, a month I withdrew $3000 to pay my wife's dentistry bill.

So now they think I'm richer than I am, and my wife's insurance plan was cancelled and replaced by an inferior one that costs 10 times as much.

I get to talk to #BlueShield, #CoveredCalifornia, and Humboldt HHS to try to straighten out this mess.

We're now trying to decide if having her go 6 months without health insurance until she qualifies for Medicare is a risk we should take.

So ironic that this all started because in the U.S., dental isn't considered healthcare.
