“I can get on stage in a bra and tiny shorts, but not in outfits that someone would consider ‘childish’. Absurd, unsettling”: says Olivia Rodrigo
“It’s not my fault if someone sexualizes me.” Olivia Rodrigo responded like this to the controversy that exploded online surrounding the babydoll outfits and “childlike” attire worn in the past few weeks to promote her new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love.
The singer discussed it during an interview on Popcast, the podcast from the New York Times, intervening after days of accusations on social media that those looks – pink dresses, bloomers, and sashes – would ultimately evoke a childish imagination and therefore, according to some users, “promote” the sexualization of minors. Rodrigo, while speaking of her personal experience, broadened the discussion to how women are judged and held responsible by the male gaze.
“I find it absurd that I can go on stage in a sparkly bra and tiny shorts and that’s considered normal, while a dress that completely covers me is judged problematic because someone considers it childish,” she explained. “It’s a demonstration of how normalized pedophilia is in our culture.”
The popstar then called the idea that a girl should dress thinking about how she might be perceived by men “disturbing.” “It’s the rhetoric with which we grow up from a young age: ‘Don’t wear that thing because someone will sexualize you and it will be your fault,’” she said. “It would be insane to start choosing clothes thinking, ‘I don’t want some maniac to find me sexy like a child.’ You completely lose the sense of reality.”
Rodrigo also recalled that her aesthetic imagination stems from the riot grrrl scene of the 1990s and artists like Kathleen Hanna, Courtney Love, and Kat Bjelland, who deliberately wore ultra-feminine dresses and almost childlike looks to subvert expectations about femininity and the idea of a “docile” woman.
