Not all is well at Lancashire CCC either.

It hasn't been for a while, the Lancashire Action Group have been critics of the LCCC board and the CEO Daniel Gidney for some time.

But now, former players are speaking out, particularly at the lack of cricket experience in the top management of LCCC and an apparent intention to try and move away from LCCC being a members' club where the members have control and cricket is the main objective.

A Special General Meeting is impending. It may not be pretty.

With my Surrey hat on I always want to see us beat that lot from over the River.

But the state Middlesex CCC are now in is humiliating and embarrassing to the point where even the most committed member of the Peter May Boys will be letting up on the mockery.

In the 1980s Middlesex were the power side of County Cricket. Often fielding a side full of internationals, meaning all of 1 to 11 had played for their country, they had serious star quality.

Which delivered 5 County championship titles from 1980-93 and 5 one day titles from 1980-88. All while contributing regular players to the England test team.

There's an expectation that if you play for Middlesex and therefore at Lord's (the "Home Of Cricket") you are top notch and will help the club be successful.

Trouble is, the last few years has been anything but successful. Embarrassing failures on and off the field have left Middlesex rudderless in every way.

Today was humiliating for the club - "Middlesex's embarrassment hit a new low this week, when the club were forced to postpone a photocall at Wednesday's annual media day, due to "unforeseen circumstances surrounding the delivery of the club's playing kit"."

And some former players have had enough. Former England captain and Middlesex legend Mike Gatting may be hogging the headlines, but the other names carry serious Middlesex clout. Their presence adds a huge amount of gravitas to the call for change.

Mike Selvey, John Emburey, Mark Ramprakash, Desmond Haynes and Clive Radley. All respected international players with their own particular profiles.

If anyone is "Mr MCC Coaching Manual and Spirit of Cricket", it's Clive Radley.

If you'd have told me that Clive Radley would be pressing for change at the top of Middlesex I would never have believed you.

Yet Radders has signed his name to the letter.

That is huge.

The Middlesex management need to recognise that.

As we near the start of the County season the profile pieces are emerging. Northants coach Darren Lehmann, a hell of a player in his own right, has shared his thoughts on the ECB and Bazball regime.

Coming on the back of Surrey coach Gareth Batty saying that county players’ route to international cricket is unclear under this England management, this is another experienced ex pro and coach who's seen and done it all saying that this regime must do better.

Darren Lehmann: England players do not play enough county cricket

Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann says England players do not play enough county cricket and selectors have overlooked talent in the domestic game.

The County Cricket season starts next week. And I am looking forward to it. Surrey are away at Warwickshire.

The e-mail confirming that this year's Wisden Cricketer's Almanack will be with me soon has landed. Things are moving in the right direction.

Hearing Mark Church's commentary on the first ball of our season makes me feel human again after the cold and damp of the winter.

Lots of stories will unfold this red ball summer. Including the hope that we have enough Dukes cricket balls to last the season.

Bring on the 2026 County season!

Just spotted a headline (from a publication I refuse to name but which can generally trusted on the subject of sport, though not on any others) "County Championship to Scrap Kookaburra Ball Experiment". If this is true I am delighted - see this post from June 29th for my thoughts on that experiment: https://aspi.blog/2025/06/29/the-invasive-species-in-the-county-championship/

The Invasive Species in the County Championship

A look at the pernicious effects the Kookaburra ball is having on the county championship and a photo gallery.

The English cricket season is over. Nottinghamshire are deserving Men's County Champions and Surrey fell short at the second last, to the disappointment of all involved with the Club, players, members and supporters.

Congratulations to Notts and to Peter Moores. The higher profile aspects of coaching life have been written about in many ways, oft uncomplimentary in tone. But County Championship titles at three different counties is not to be mocked or slated.

From a Surrey perspective, it's human nature to pick out a moment where everything started to go wrong and blame it on that but let's enjoy winning 3 consecutive County Championship titles and almost getting to four. There are good things happening at the Club under Gareth Batty and Alec Stewart.

This piece from BBC Sport airing the thoughts of Durham CCC's CEO is interesting - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/cnvr9yl0vnqo

I don't know about "perplexed". Isn't there a point where you realise that things aren't going well so changes and/or preparation need to be made?

I feel for Durham. Last time they were relegated it was thanks to internal politics at the then management of the ECB, for which I will never forgive those whose public and private utterances caused this.

It would have been redemption and revenge served cold if Durham had got the draw they needed to send Hampshire down to Division 2. It was in their hands to save themselves and relegate Hampshire.

But they didn't.

And that will hurt them like hell.
