Day 1 of the County Cricket season has ended and my power to jinx teams I watch remains as strong as ever 😀

I note with interest the BBC News piece about Rob Key and Brendon McCullum being part of a call with county coaches.

When Gareth Batty makes a criticism as he as of the Bazball regime, that needs to be taken on board. He's a very positive chap who I've had the pleasure of chatting with on a few occasions.

Gareth doesn't do criticism unless it's deserved and he's always measured in what he says. We are blessed to have him as our Men's Head Coach at Surrey.

Whatever Key, McCullum, Thompson and Gould may say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. They need to deliver to back up their words.

I'll say it again - England are 7th out of 9 in the World Test Championship.

That is not good enough.

After a wobbly start, I think Surrey ended up having quite a good day, at the start of the County Cricket.

Warwickshire have bowled Surrey out on day one, but a Surrey total of 328 is bad news for them given that a) they won the toss and opted to bowl and b) Surrey were 65-6 at one point before Ben Foakes (128) led a recovery aided by Tom Lawes and Sean Abbott.

Batting bonus point for Surrey, which did not look likely at 65-6. They are now 250-7 with Ben Foakes 87 not out and Sean Abbott 14 not out.

The great partnership between Lawes and Foakes ends with Lawes going for 83, caught by Mousley off Gilchrist. Foakes is into the 70s, and the seventh wicket stand yielded 155, turning a dire 65-6 into a semi-respectable 220-7.

Tea in #Birmingham. Surrey are 198-6, having at one point been 65-6. Tom Lawes has 78 not out, the highest score of his career to date (he is mainly a bowler, and a very good one too) and Ben Foakes (wicket keeping all rounder) has 55 not out.

Good fightback from Surrey after a disastrous start. They were 61-4 at lunch, lost two wickets almost immediately after the interval to be 65-6 at low water mark but Tom Lawes (67 not out) and Ben Foakes (44 not out) have taken the score to 176-6 with tea not long distant.

Ethan Bamber has bowled well this morning and Dan Lawrence tries to drive at one and edges from the former Middlesex bowler to Beau Webster in the slips.

Poor shot in challenging conditions and with lunch coming.

Lawrence goes for 5, Surrey go to lunch at 61/4.

Lovely to see spectators allowed on the outfield.

Ollie Pope lbw to Ethan Bamber but that wicket comes after Ed Barnard gave Ollie a right working over.

Mike Taylor called it, mentioning Barnard v Pope at The Kia Oval last summer. Today he got an edge behind dropped by Kai Smith as he landed and a no-shot lbw appeal that I'd have given but the umpire didn't.

It's a green pitch which I'd fancy a bowl on.
