unpicking this chunked-up statement about the excessive carbon-cost of sending emails ⬇️ .
The most opaque part is each email has a cost of 1 g of carbon, an average of the figures estimated by Tim Berners Lee, 10-ish yrs ago, given in the countryfile page.
"A spam email…0.3g CO2e …
a "regular" [wtf?] email … 4g
an email with a photo or "significant" [also wtf?] attachment …50g …"
Bernerss-Lee ref is to book, if anyone has it. Rest of the calcs are ovo energy link in the countryfile one. Ovo itself offers a gamut of domestic energy plans, including gas, default grid-mix, and 100% renewable
Judging by the fact that the gafam mail providers regularly return my mails - yes even replies - from my own renewable-energy powered server - they must be so lightweight as to be considered spam! ;-P
If you've not got one, get a genuine #green email account eg. posteo.de, if you're in europe
Many mailers default to html - switch it off and unload a whole lot of baggage in one easy step.
Remove received attachments when you reply.
Even delete superfluous signatures and the quoted message if long and non-essential.
Does your mail app need to check the server every minute?
Do you really need to send 30MB size images of your cat etc bcs that's what your phone takes -- when 0.3MB is sufficient to fill a laptop screen, if the image is not too detailed, and 3MB is high res? Scale them first.
How many streaming video or audio minutes are you burning thru per 0.3 g email?
Are you running your own computer/household on 100% renewables and avoiding flying or driving a combustion vehicle? If not, why fret about <0.1% of your external carbon impact?
Can we carry on emailing now?
