Plantation owners call for killing permits for native flying foxes

"Currently, farmers with a permit can kill up to eight grey-headed, 45 black and 50 little red flying foxes annually, and must report each death."

"[Flying foxes] are a native species … they are our only long-distance night pollinators. Flying foxes are losing a lot of their normal habitat, forcing them inland, and so they take risky actions to get food like going into yards and orchards."

Bulldozing the habitat of endangered species in NSW

"The Australian Conservation Foundation is alleging thousands of hectares of endangered species habitat has been illegally cleared in south-west New South Wales between 2021 and 2025."

"Experts say land clearing rates are unlikely to be reduced without education and effective enforcement..A lot more land is being cleared than grown back or restored which is unusual for a wealthy, developed country like ours."

@DoomsdaysCW

So politely put.

" ... by which polluters can go to the president and request a ‘get out of jail free’ card".

Can anyone see Trump handing these out for free?

A fine is just that: it’s fine. Just pay us a cut of your profits and keep doing what you’re doing.

@samuel @inevernu

The ONLY purpose of imposing fines is to ensure only the suitably rich will be allowed to do it. It is typically the really expensive sports cars who will drive like total idiots, because they can. They can also afford better lawyers.

@EU_Commission @bart
Thanks. Unfortunately, this gets into the '#costOfDoingBusiness' realm, which is unlikely to deter the technoFeudalists much.

They may pretend to care but they secretly won't.

They get money printed, to extract from us. That is their business model, so when they are threatened with fines all that does is increase #inflation.

tl/dr: We still lose, #EU just cashes in. Blocking the technoFeudalist at the network level should be considered as part of a comprehensive strategy.

@wesdym
I think the damages ought to be proportionate to the size of the organization and the depth of its pockets. Many #hospitals (yes, even many of those so-called "community" hospitals) are now 100% owned and operated by enormous healthcare mega-conglomerates with substantial assets and cash reserves.

I'm obviously not advocating for completely bankrupting any #healthcare organization here. But when they screw up and cause harm to their #patients, we need to make sure they feel the pain every bit as acutely as their patients do. Otherwise, they'll just keep budgeting for future #LegalPenalties as a #CostOfDoingBusiness, making none of the changes necessary to prevent such incidents from happening again, and laughing all the way to the bank.
