@gimulnautti I'm all for socialists learning from past failures and doing some reappraisal.

For example, by acknowledging Soviet Russia was a Russian imperialist authoritarian state that in many ways was similar to the czarist regime before it, and the oligarchy that came after.

My suggestion would be to choose a name that highlights /how/ you intend to be different to past forms of socialism, rather than just titling it "neosocialism".

Democratic socialism? A reformed socialism that retains liberal institutions free and fair multiparty elections and an independent judiciary?

Participatory socialism? A reformed socialism that emphasises public participation in economic and government decision making?

Open-source socialism? A reformed socialism combined with open source movement ideals on technology and intellectual property?

Co-operative socialism? A reformed socialism that seeks to reorganise industry into consumer and/or producer co-operatives, giving customers and workers a direct say in the firms they use?

Nonprofit socialism? A reformed socialism where services are funded by the state through taxes, but are delivered through nonprofit organisations that are owned and controlled by beneficiaries?

These days, most money spent in the city disappears from its local economy. This isn't a political point, it's just an observation I find interesting and I wonder if it can help explain why Glasgow as a city now struggles in so many ways to make ends meet.

In the 1950s, more than 200,000 people in Glasgow, or about one fifth of its population, were members of a Cooperative Society, and they accounted for 10% of all retail sales in the city.

This meant Cooperative Societies were part of a massive circular economy where money earned in the city was spent in businesses owned by the people of the city and any profits made remained in the city's local econony.

@thisismyglasgow elements of this still remain here in France. Bio-coop for example and even in a local chain supermarket, I’m far more likely to find very local produce for sale. Localism seems much healthier in France.
@thisismyglasgow I repost this from time to time - as much to remind myself as anything else. It’s difficult but examples like supporting farmers markets and using Amazon only as a desperate last resort when all other avenues are exhausted and you really really can’t do without the ‘item’ helps.
@thisismyglasgow there are some very interesting studies coming out of the USA, showing that suburbia is subsidised by the centre of town.
Infrastructure, especially roads, are a major expense in suburbia and as the outskirts grow at the expense of the city centre, the city becomes less viable.
Glasgow has done better than Edinburgh in repopulating the city centre, but much more needs to be done to bring the finances back on track. Adding more bands to the top rateable values would help as well.
@peterbrown That sounds very interesting, and I'll need to look those studies.up. In order to survive financially, Glasgow definitely needs to get its tax base back, and for me that includes not only repopulating thr city centre, but getting the suburbs to pay their fare share as well (like they did when we had the Strathclyde Regional Council) or become incorporated into Glasgow itself since they rely on its resources which they don't otherwise pay for.
@thisismyglasgow well I think the lesson from the US research was that suburbs do not pay their way, so the fewer Glasgow has the better.
@thisismyglasgow this screenshot from the other place might give you a lead in
@peterbrown Thanks. Much appreciated. 👍🙂
@thisismyglasgow We used to get the yu-lade blackcurrant essence from the Co-op.
@ariaflame @thisismyglasgow The classic was yu-lade ginger for New Year.
@HighlandLawyer @thisismyglasgow I know, but I was more of a blackcurrant 'wine' fan.
@thisismyglasgow @kcarruthers when I was a kid in Newcastle in the 50s & 60s the Coop Store was huge, everybody shopped there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle_and_Suburban_Co-operative_Society
