Did you know you can grow: #BlackWalnut

#UGAExtension experts provide information on growing uncommon Southern delights in your own backyard.

"#GeorgiaUSA is famous for its #peaches, #pecans and #peanuts, but thanks to its mild climate, the state also supports a variety of uncommon and exotic fruits and nuts.

"In a series inspired by University of Georgia #CooperativeExtension publication 'Minor Fruits and Nuts in Georgia,' edited by UGA Extension consumer horticulturist Bob Westerfield, we’ll highlight lesser-known edibles that can thrive in Georgia home gardens.

"This issue's focus is black walnut, a large nut tree native to Georgia and many parts of the eastern United States.

"Historically, the black walnut was a crucial tree for Native Americans, particularly the Cherokee, Delaware and Apache tribes. Indigenous people used various parts of the tree in their daily lives as a key ingredient in breads, soups and puddings. Parts of the bark and leaves repelled bugs and treated snake bites, sores, toothaches and other ailments."

So, I did some research on #CooperativeExtension websites last night for today's #SolarPunkSunday . It seems that #UMaineCooperativeExtension is one of the few that has a lot of free advice (many others have workshops, some with fees). I did find a few other ones -- #GeorgiaCooperativeExtension, #VirginiaCooperativeExtension. But the #UAFCooperativeExtension (University of Alaska - Fairbanks) had some really cool information about foraging for native Alaskan berries which I'll be posting later today!

Welcome - UC ANR Academic Recruit

My previous post shared what I’m looking for in a PhD program. Below is a description of where I’m looking to aim doctoral research.

Posthuman Community Development is my vision, which for me is asking: What is community today in the Anthropocene? Who is included who has not been in past ages (water, animals, spirits, material objects, machines, diverse human-shapes and colors, etc)? What are some models that might support a more effective and relevant way of being “in community” today? What human constructs about communities can we let go of bc they no longer serve (the term “human,” gender, etc). What happens to communities and individual community members if we’re able to manipulate the flow of energy/entropy through technology? How do we incorporate the fields of psychology and consciousness studies into new ways of thinking about/doing community? How does trauma inform how our bodies/minds show up in communities?

2/2 Lastly, I enjoy the intersection of Cooperative Extension and academia. I’m thinking that if I stay in the USA, I might want to check out land-grant universities (affiliated with Cooperative Extension)?

Possibly, I see a potential path to work at a Cooperative Extension where I can pursue my PhD, and my research can be directly related to the work I do with Extension. I’ve worked extensively with Cooperative Extension in the past and love that ecosystem. However, the university I worked with at that time doesn’t offer a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies nor Community Development.

I’m also open to other options. I’m just getting my feet wet in this search, so I’m pretty much open to exploring any rabbit hole that folx send my way if it has anything minorly to do with the above description.

@cheeseblintzes Sounds like you're a pro, but beginners might like to know that their local university #MasterGardeners or #CooperativeExtension office can pare this list way down to the varieties known to do best in your location 🍅 .
