How to pass the invisible

This post explores the enduring challenge in software programming of how to pass invisible contextual information, such as loggers or request contexts, through applications without cumbersome explicit parameter passing. It examines various approaches throughout history, including dynamic scoping, aspect-oriented programming (AOP), context variables, monads, and effect systems. Each method offers a unique solution, from the simplicity of dynamic scoping in early Lisp to the modularity of AOP and the type-safe encoding of effects in modern functional programming. The post highlights the trade-offs of each approach, such as the unpredictability of dynamic scoping or the complexity of monad transformers. It also touches on how context variables are used in modern asynchronous and parallel programming, as well as in UI frameworks like React. The author concludes by noting that the art of passing the invisible is an eternal theme in software programming, and this post provides valuable insights into the evolution and future directions of this critical aspect of software architecture.

GitHub - dipampaul17/KVSplit: Run larger LLMs with longer contexts on Apple Silicon by using differentiated precision for KV cache quantization. KVSplit enables 8-bit keys & 4-bit values, reducing memory by 59% with <1% quality loss. Includes benchmarking, visualization, and one-command setup. Optimized for M1/M2/M3 Macs with Metal support.

BBC appears to admit on it's #Contexts program on 12/12 that U.S. forces protecting the #SDF in northeast Syria were protecting them, after the defeat of ISIS in 2017, not from ISIS nor from Assad's forces but from nato ally Turkey and the Turkish stats- sponsored #SNA the so- called Syrian National Army.
Trump nearly pulled the plug on
u. s. forces in n.e. Syria but was talked out of it by advisor at the time. 50,000 ISIS prisoners held by #sdf have not yet been repatriated to their home countries which don't want them. ( Kyrgyzstan is one exception ). Risky!
100,000 Kurds displaced in & around n.e. Syria due to attacks by turkish- backed #SNA & affiliated mercenaries.

#Aerialphotography not only allows the #landscape #photographer a #perspective that is otherwise reserved for birds. #Dronephotography also provides an impression of #ecological #contexts. For example, my aerial photo from the north of #Berlin clearly shows the natural corridors between agricultural areas, which allows #biodiversity to spread and find #refuges for hibernation.

This should be obvious to all people in all modern cultures, but sadly it is not and some groups are working to “turn back the clock. Women are full human beings and should be accorded FULL human r…

@Alice This is an area I know my #ActuallyAutistic brain is at work. I’m constantly doing the #ChatGPT thing of considering all the #contexts of things others say. Partly I think I do it to validate I understand them, and if an impasse occurs where my context doesn’t align then I begin sling questions. But in #naughty contexts it gives me ideas for play or fun. 😈 @devxvda
