A small group of students have begun a movement to change the way the Ohio State community thinks about food, one container garden at a time. The Container Gardens Initiative is a student-led agriculture project that promotes food equity and sustainability by creating raised-bed gardens on campus, according to their Instagram page. Fast-approaching my favorite time of year. My first three of #SixOnSaturday.
I love all the colors of autumn as the light shines through the trees in such a different way than it does in spring. I think of it as Ray Bradbury Season - there is an enigma and uncertainty in the decaying days of summer.
I've been testing this new Agapanthus 'Sun Stripe' over the summer in various clients' container gardens, and I really love the foliage. It has held up perfectly through heat and humidity. This is a part-shade agapanthus.

Small space gardening - go vertical! Turning a drab wall into a cozy botanical vignette.

One of my favorite begonias with Algerian ivy for a full shade porch. I have to clip these begonias back on occasion to allow access to the front door. I've been working with this client weekly since 2007... quite a nice run.

5/5 Add some additional interest with texture and/or seasonal color: golden acorus grass or creeping jenny. Leave a space in your container garden to tuck in winter or summer annuals if you need a little color. Browallia, begonias AND houseplants work beautifully in the summer, and violas do well in the winter, tolerating more shade than pansies.

4/5 If you have larger planters, consider a permanent feature plant like a dwarf conifer, boxwood, or a Camellia japonica. Add ferns to complement other plants and perennials: either tassel or holly ferns - both are evergreen, work well in containers, and will grow to become substantial plants.

3/5 Lenten Rose (Hellebore) - winter blooms in pink, maroon, or white, sometimes yellow and black. The foliage is evergreen, tolerates full shade and some have stunning foliage.
Depending on the cultivar, Lenten Roses start blooming in December, while others bloom in February - but the flowers last for weeks and WEEKS in the dead of winter. Pest and disease free.
