@ErikJonker @geopolitics This is such an important observation about how platform design shapes public discourse!
It’s both fascinating and concerning to see how the same factual information can spark constructive conversation on one platform and devolve into disinformation on another. The contrast between Bluesky and X really underscores how algorithms and moderation policies influence the quality of dialogue.
For me, the fediverse—especially Mastodon—has been a breath of fresh air in this regard. It feels like a space where facts and evidence-based discussions can thrive, rooted in a shared reality rather than outrage or misinformation. But I’m curious: Is this just my personal experience, or do others share the impression that Mastodon fosters a more fact-based discussion environment? Have you explored other platforms beyond Bluesky that prioritize constructive dialogue?
It’s disheartening to see how platforms that prioritize engagement over accuracy can drown out meaningful conversations. While I’m fortunate enough to avoid Twitter/X and Meta, I recognize that transitioning to open-source, decentralized social networks isn’t feasible for everyone. This makes me wonder: How can we encourage more platforms to adopt models that foster informed debate rather than outrage? Supporting not-for-profit or decentralized alternatives might be part of the solution, but it’s a challenge that requires broader awareness and action.
Thanks for sharing this—it’s a powerful reminder of how critical platform design is to the health of our digital public spaces!

"Shattered Reality: When Truth Dies and Democracy Follows"
Just had a Mastodon interaction where I tried to push back against a judgemental tone and the other said "no tone policing" plus a vulgar insult. Straight to report and block. I'm on here for constructive discourse, and polite pushback should elicit polite responses. Otherwise I'll protect my feed.
Tone matters, because not everyone has the spoons to deal with heightened emotions. Civil dialogue is dialogue that more people can participate in.
Thanks to the nice Fediverse advice [1] from myrmepropagandist [2] which is relevant and helpful.
Similar to this post [3], I also strongly advocate usage of hashtags in posts and also following hashtags.
Write thoughtful posts without caring about reach and visibility. Good posts, preferably with hashtags, will find the right audience sooner or later.
In this context, I must highlight a quote by John Stuart Mill. This quote encourages individuals to embrace their right to free expression and to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue with others.
My Fediverse Advice: * Follow more people. No, even more people than that. Basically, if you find a real person and their posts are good follow 'em * If you get a good reply to a post boost it. If you make a good reply to a post boost it. Replies are not visible in the feed unless you do this. As long as the post is an OK start to a conversation or interesting boost it. * Write thoughtful replies. And if you put effort into a reply boost it or probably only the people tagged will see it.
Debating using logic and reason is an effective way to frustration and burn-out, instead reframe narratives which encrypt moral choices into stories:

Christopher Hitchens once wittily opined, "Those who are determined to be ‘offended’ will discover a provocation somewhere. We cannot possibly adjust enough to please the fanatics, and it is degrading to make the attempt." Reading that, you might chuckle or nod in agreement, or, ironically, you might be offended. If you belong to the latter category, this blog post is especially for you.
