"High amounts of a toxic chemical are being discharged into the Congaree and Cooper rivers from plastics factories in South Carolina, but state and federal regulators are doing little to control the pollution, a new report says.

A study by the Environmental Integrity Project, a national public interest organization, found that of eight similar plastics plants it studied, factories near Columbia and Charleston had some of the highest releases of 1,4- dioxane, a chemical tied to an array of health ailments, including cancer."

We went back to Congaree yesterday morning and it was raining steadily. We were very glad we saved the boardwalk trail since the other one was extremely muddy. We were rewarded with fewer people, and seeing more wildlife: deer, rabbit, feral piglets, fox squirrels, and turtles.

We also meet other wildlife. There weren't as many wildflowers as we'd seen at other parks, but the ones e found were lovely. There were mushrooms here and there. We saw two different kinds of skinks: one with red heads and the other with blue tails. We also saw a raccoon doing forest raccoon things, but he was too far away for my phone camera.

Wednesday brought us to Congaree National Park, "the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States" and they have lots of really big trees, many "champions" for their species. Fortunately, it wasn't too wet so we could take the loop trail through the flood plain.
