looking to self-host a #matrix server as a #discord replacement to migrate my friend group away from there now that the whole age verification catastrophe is happening.

is there a #conduwuit alternative that isn't uncomfortably sexualised and in-your-face about everything?

i guess i could use regular #conduit, but the docs warn about it being somewhat unstable compared to the former. #synapse seems to be insanely difficult to set up, and #dendrite looks like it has none of the strengths of the two others

i'd just use "conduwuit" but as a trans person it's making me genuinely super uncomfortable to see that kind of hypersexual fetishy trans 'representation' that they're going for. i just want a normal software project

As much as I hate bagging open source volunteer projects... I'm going to, in a minor way with this observation.

I was siting in the #continuwuity #matrix channel and someone asked about the confusing naming throughout the project; some stuff is labelled #conduit, some #conduwuit, and some continuwuity - and where continuwuity is used in the docs it conflict with actuality. Even the systemd conf dir and user is different.

Surely a `find and replace` done before making other changes would be better for the long term stability of the project; do the boring and annoying stuff now so you don't need to worry about it later?

Great project still; it's not something I could create or maintain and am appreciate that it exists still.

Saying Matrix is bad because the Mossad created it is like saying SELinux and AES encryption is bad because the NSA created it or saying water is bad because Hitler drank water.

They have their flaws but saying something is bad because a bad actor used it is crazy imo

I'm not defending Matrix, it's E2EE implementation is flawed UX-wise and the community LOVES drama and bikeshedding, but holy crap

Excited to announce the first release (v0.5.0-rc.5) of Continuwuity:

Continuwuity is a community-led fork of the Matrix homeserver conduwuit, picking up development after the original was archived (see: https://girlboss.ceo/~strawberry/conduwuit.txt).

Good news for existing users: Continuwuity is a drop-in replacement! Just swap the binary/Docker image.
Conduwuit still runs but isn't updated; Continuwuity is the path forward.

I don't think self hosting a personal matrix server is for me anymore. I'm going back to my matrix•org server for now. I didn't really use it in a way that I thought benefited enough to justify keeping up with hosting it. Besides from what I can tell conduwuit is no more? Oh well, again not worth the effort for me right now.
