When #CommunityEngagedLearning (#CEL) and #Diversity meet:

If the rationale for CEL is “exposure of students to other groups”, the assumption is students are a "different" group. This is an injustice to students who come from a background similar to societal partners involved. Instructors must examine how CEL touches student diversity, how this affects students, and take action to
make CEL inclusive for all students.

Where community engaged learning and diversity meet – Education, animals and sustainability

How can veterinary students learn to approach stakeholders, patient owners, lay public and other non-vets in ways that acknowledge expertise of all? How can this be approached so that doesn’t discount the science-based knowledge a vet brings to the table?

*Sometimes it is about sitting *next to* eachother. In my blog, thoughts on veterinary professionalization and reciprocity.

Reciprocity or the art of connecting – Education, animals and sustainability

What will change for academic institutions as the climate crisis is increasingly not some far-off future, but happening now? And are we preparing our students for these uncomfortable conversations?

Many thanks to @jonippolito for recommending this book by @bryanalexandee ; has given me much food for thought. More ruminations found here: https://rebeccanordquist.edublogs.org/2024/04/29/universities-on-fire/

Universities on Fire – Education, animals and sustainability

The CEL movement is growing, wheels are turning!
More about CEL at Utrecht University here: https://www.uu.nl/en/education/community-engaged-learning
...and for colleagues at UU, there is another CEL course for teachers coming up from Feb - June 2024; very highly recommend! https://www.uu.nl/en/news/second-community-engaged-learning-course-registration-open-for-teachers

Community Engaged Learning

Community Engaged Learning is experiential education in which students, teachers and external partners work together on societal challenges.

Utrecht University

Are courses with "Community Engaged Learning-like components" a good place to start, or do they water down educational outcomes too much? How to ensure that CEL efforts by educators are recognized and rewarded, and educators using CEL supported?

So many questions, such a bouquet of answers. How does your institute do this?

What do we mean by Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at Utrecht University? How do we define CEL? Yesterday the CEL team held a retreat in our always-stunning buildings in the centre of Utrecht- photo is of the stained glass ceiling in the library. Highly inspirational once again to hear examples of CEL from across the UU, and discuss viewpoints for practical implementation.

#introduction My name is Seneca. I am an interdisciplinary scholar that focuses on #raceandethnicitypolicy using #appliedhistoricalmethods #studyabroad and #CommunityEngagedLearning.

I am annoyingly a generalist with a passion for learning new things, meeting new people, and going new places.

You know about #OpenScience, but how about #OpenEducation? And what *is* #OpenEducation?
Last week the #SpecialInterestGroup s at #UniUtrecht joined forces to talk about the role of #OpenEducation in #CommunityEngagedLearning, #Interdisciplinarity, #Co-creation, #ChallengeBasedLearning, and #Sustainability in education
Time for an #introduction! I'm an #academic working at the Faculty of #Veterinary Med #VetEd, Utrecht University in the Netherlands in #FarmAnimalWelfare, #AnimalBehavior and #AnimalCognition, and the role of livestock in #sustainability in #FoodSystems. Also getting students and the #Utrecht community connected with #CommunityEngagedLearning and myself with the world outside the uni through #PublicEngagement and #SciComm. Team #chicken because they are smarter (and cooler) than you think.
