Random note:
I am *convinced* someone in this movie was the inspiration for the “I didn’t ask for the anal probe” anecdote in “Passionfish” https://youtu.be/hkcIBvJU8Uk

Also as described in the book, the reason Anne gets aggravated enough to threaten divorce is because Whitley decided he wanted to move back home to Texas & sell their cabin
then he and Anne flew to Austin to tour a house, he had a nervous breakdown, and decided he didn't want to move to Austin, actually. She told him if he kept this up she'd divorce him, and he got his shit back in order. That's a reasonable thing to get fed up over, honestly.
Otherwise, she seemed pretty compassionate, even when she didn't necessarily understand. Kind of tragic the film portrayed her as a woman who belittles her husband who is clearly dealing with a mental breakdown of some sort.
(Also though skeptical, Whitley was not opposed to hypnosis. At least as described in the book, he didn't pitch an adult tantrum about the idea.)
i was curious enough to double check my memory of the book, grabbed my copy, and confirmed that the only mention of Whitley grabbing his shotgun was when there was a noise downstairs and he went to check for an intruder. He checked downstairs and outside, didn't see anything, and did not fire the weapon.
He definitely didn't fire it, and he definitely didn't almost shoot his wife in a fit of mania.
