- A cardiac arrest on any playing field is often due to an arrhythmia.
- Two common causes of cardiac arrest are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and #CommotioCordis.
- Prompt defibrillation with an AED is very effective.
- The time to defibrillation and restoration of circulation is of the essence.
- The prognosis plummets for every minute past that 4 minute mark.
- An on-field AED would cost the equivalent of four NFL helmets.

(1/2) I have been trying to suss out the timeline of #DamarHamlin's tragic cardiac arrest. Not much is available right now.

A few observations:
- The standard of care should be an #AED ON THE FIELD
- The trainer/doctor going out to an unconscious player should carry the AED with them.
- ABC's > no breathing/pulse > #CPR > defibrillate
- defibrillation should occur within 2 to 4 minutes of collapse.
- This is doable IF THE AED IS ON THE FIELD and folks are trained.

3⃣While we don't know specifics of this case, #commotiocordis is rare but important to know about. Most frequently in teens hit in chest with a baseball, it's caused by an interruption in electrical activity of the heart at a very specific moment in the heartbeat.
