DBFuel Land Allotments, East Finchley. When Finchley Common was enclosed in the early 19th century, it was for the benefit of the large landowners. This small parcel of land was set aside, however, to rent to local farmers, and the money raised would be paid to the deserving poor for their winter fuel. By the end of the century the land had become an allotment garden (but what happened to the poor?)
Anyway, these gates, on the A1000 Great North Road, must be among the most stylish allotment gates in the country.
