The magnificent female eider, and bird parents generally do everything they can to ensure the well-being of their young chicks, regardless of the species. Eagles, large gulls and other predators are a threat to the survival of eider chicks, not to mention human impact on the sea and the loss of biodiversity in general. What can we do?

Koirashaahka viihtyi poikasten ja niiden emon kanssa, voiskohan olla iskä? Suurin osa koiraista on jo lähtenyt takaisin kauas avomeren luodoille. Joillakin on syytä vielä olla pesintäpaikkojen lähistöllä.

The male eider was enjoying the company of chicks and their mother, could he be a dad? Most of the males have already returned to the far offshore islets. Some still have reasons to be near of the nesting sites, closer to human habitat.

Haahkat tulevat keväällä ulkosaaristosta pesimään mantereen ja ihmisasutusten lähistöille. Se ehkä luo turvaa pesintään, kun ulkoluodoilla uhkana ovat kotkien lisäksi myös minkkipopulaatiot ja naaraiden stressi (koiraita vaikuttaa vuosi vuodelta olevan enemmän kuin naaraita) ja muut häiriötekijät.

In the spring, eiders come from the outer archipelago to nest near the mainland and human settlements. This may provide safety for nesting, as the distant islets are threatened not only by eagles but also by mink populations and stress on females (there seem to be more male than females every year) and other disturbances.
