They were taken with a 135mm focal-length telephoto lens on a digital SLR camera (at f/2.8). Last night's was a 20 sec exposure (one of a sequence I haven't had time to reduce yet).

Last night's image also shows two star clusters. NGC 6633 is the group of stars at the top, and IC 4756 is to the upper left of the comet. Both are open star clusters.

The sky was clear last night and I was able to image Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which has faded greatly over the past few weeks.

On the left, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS imaged yesterday evening (Thursday, 8th November), the first clear evening in three weeks.

On the right, the comet with the same lens the previous clear night (17th October).

The images show how much the comet has faded and reduced in angular size over three weeks.

Comet C/2023 A3 through the clouds
============================

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is a long-period comet discovered by the ATLAS survey on January 9, 2023. The comet is currently visible in the evening sky in the northern hemisphere and due to it’s brightness (reached magnitude -4), it’s visible to the naked eye on a dark sky and well visible using binoculars or small telescopes.

While in my image, the dust tail is visible through the clouds, it recently also developed an anti-tail, a long and thin line pointing towards the sun. This rare phenomenon is caused by cometary dust particles accumulating in the comet’s orbital plane.

We setup my camera on one of the Buffalo Astronomical Association's telescopes during the Buffalo Audubon's Trick-or-Treat Hike event on 10//19/2024 to capture comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas). Here’s my process of the data. 112 subs at 15 sec each for 28 minutes of total exposure. More Comet hunting tonight. The skies were clear, so we drove 60km west, over Mt Glorious and down to the back end of Lake Wivenhoe.

This time, I shot not only with the 200mm f/1.8 lens, but also with my 15mm f/2.8 fisheye for a more environmental shot.

Venus was the brightest thing in the sky, as the moon was well and truly set, but even out here we had some glow on the horizon from the township of Esk (probably).
