I also have in mind how ‘identity politics’, when the Combahee River Collective first popularised the term in their 1977 manifesto, was about nurturing cooperation and solidarity across differences.

Since we’re exchanging references: Olúfémi O. Táíwò has recently provided an account of this history of ‘identity politics’ - in which he also details how he sees its subsequent embedding in new situations - in Elite Capture: How The Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else).
