Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks, Everybody’s Rockin’, 1983 on Geffen

Credited (as you can see on the cover and the labels) to Neil Young but also to Neil and the Shocking Pinks, this was Neil’s rockabilly album, with a band assembled just for this purpose.

I realize I’m something of a Neil Young completist, but I really enjoy this album, short as it is.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is a 1983 Carrollton pressing from the Columbia House Record Club (noted on the rear jacket).

Fine Young Cannibals, The Raw & The Cooked, 1988 on IRS Records / MCA

This was the second Fine Young Cannibals album following their self-titled debut. Roland Gift on vocals with the rhythm section of Andy Cox and David Steele (formerly of The Beat aka The English Beat).

Many of the songs on the LP had already appeared on film soundtracks including three from the Barry Levinson film Tin Men. Most well known would be “She Drives Me Crazy” which was a number 1 hit in the US.

My copy—via A1 Records in NYC—is a Columbia House Record Club pressing from Carrollton GA. (Note the CRC in the bottom right corner of the back sleeve).

John Hiatt, Bring the Family, 1987 on A&M

John Hiatt’s eighth studio album and his first on A&M. What a fantastic songwriter! Actually paid for by Demon Records in the UK, but picked up after being completed by A&M in the US.

Guests include Ry Cooder (doing harmony vocals on “Have a Little Faith in Me” as well as electric guitar and sitar work), Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums, making this something of a proto-Little Village album. Also includes “Thing Called Love” that was later a hit for Bonnie Raitt.

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is a Columbia House club pressing (Carrollton) with CRC on the bottom of the rear cover.

Simon & Garfunkel, The Concert In Central Park, 1982 on Warner Bros

One of the best live albums from one of my favorite duos. Good variety of tempos and tunes, enough stage banter to feel live but no so much that you feel the need to skip ahead.

Wikipedia correctly recognizes it as “the” concert in central park – recorded in front of a half million people in September 1981. It was actually a benefit for the park itself – and was filmed by HBO (it was both […]
