Heavily worn setts in the pend leading to the Hidden Lane in Glasgow. The Hidden Lane is a collection of old industrial buildings tucked away behind a row of tenements on Argyle Street in the Finnieston area of Glasgow. The buildings are now occupied by a variety of small, independent businesses.

A stone tramway leading up Cleveden Crescent Lane in the west of Glasgow. Consisting of slabs of smoothed granite, they reduced the friction between cartwheels and cobbled streets, while the setts in between the tramways provided grip for the horses' hooves. This allowed one horse to pull what it would otherwise take two horses to move.

I love the iron tramway and kerb protectors on the old bridge over the White Cart at Pollok House in Glasgow. Such tramways, whether stone or iron, were designed to make it easier for horse-drawn vehicles to travel along cobbled streets. This bridge once led to Pollok Toon, a lost village which was cleared by the owners of Pollok House int he 19th Century.

In Britain, this started with the creation of the Birkenhead Tramway in the 1860s, which, rather oddly, was built by the American George Francis Train!

One of Glasgow's few surviving stone tramways on Cleveden Crescent Lane in the west of the city. Consisting of slabs of smoothed granite, they reduced the friction between cartwheels and cobbled streets, while the setts in between the tramways provided grip for the horses' hooves. This allowed one horse to pull what it would otherwise take two horses to move.
