'The Arctic winds blowing in buffeted the hunters in their mammoth- and camel-hide clothing. Spring was coming to the valley, but the dying days of winter still carried the freezing burn of the great ice sheets which lay a few weeks’ walk to the north.
The hunters and their people had come from the north not long ago; the eldest among them were the grandchildren of those original migrants, sages who told generational stories of enormous glaciers stretching as far as the eye could see. They themselves had seen the vast lakes where meltwater collected behind dams of ice, and they told of the apocalyptic floods that scoured the land when those dams collapsed.'
