I have services in my #homelab that need #postgres quite often. In my #k3s cluster I'm using #cloudnativepg to provision single-use databases for services. What should I do for my services running in #docker? Create a single VM that just runs Postgres and connect them all to it? Provision a single Postgres in k3s and expose it so that docker containers externally can use it?
Move anything that needs postgres to #kubernetes?
#selfhosting can get complicated 😔

はじめに Kubernetes上でPostgreSQLを動かすために、CloudNativePGを使ってみました。 これまでは単純にPostgreSQLのコンテナをPodとして動かしていましたが、レプリケーションやバックアップ・リストア周りを手軽に使えそうなので、運用面を考えてCloudNativePGを選びました。 CloudNativePGでPostgreSQLクラスタを建てて、Barman Cloud Pluginを使ったS3互換ストレージへのWALアーカイブ、定期バックアップ、バックアップからのリストアまでを一通り試したので、設定や手順について記録しておこうと思います。

On 5th of March, 2026, we had the PostgreSQL March Meetup in Berlin. Zalando hosted it again, and like last time it was four regular talks in two parallel tracks. The Meetup took place in the Hedwig-Wachenheim-Straße in Berlin, right around the corner from the Uber Arena and East Side Gallery. The event was co-sponsored by Zalando (venue, drinks) and AWS (pizza, snacks).
Some time this weekend, we'll be upgrading the #Mastodon #PostgreSQL cluster on #MSTDNDK. The cluster is being managed by #CloudNativePG and upgrades have been successfully tested on multiple other clusters - even upgrades directly from version 15 to 18.
While this is an incredibly smooth and easy process, major upgrades requires that #CNPG takes down the whole database cluster, meaning https://mstdn.dk will be unavailable for a period of time. Exactly how long is unknown, since we've never actually done this before with clusters of this size.
I'll keep you posted and give you fair warning 🙂
