Methane (CH4) exerts about 25 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. That’s not how it really works in the atmosphere, though. Methane is very powerful, but it also breaks down quickly, generally within a couple of decades. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide (CO2) builds up cumulatively in the atmosphere—and much of whatever we emit will continue heating up the planet for hundreds to thousands of years.

"Meteorologists said the extreme temperatures are driven by a heat dome, a vast area of high pressure that has become parked over Western Europe.

"The phenomenon is being sustained by what is known as an omega block, a weather pattern named for the Greek letter because of the similar shape it creates in the atmosphere.

"Under normal conditions, the jet stream carries weather systems from west to east. During an omega block, however, that flow becomes distorted, trapping a ridge of high pressure between two low-pressure systems.

"The result is that hot, stagnant air remains locked over the same region for days or even weeks. The UK Met Office said Britain currently lies on the boundary between the high-pressure system and cooler air to the northwest, which is creating sharp contrasts between hotter conditions in the south and east and cooler, wetter weather farther north."

Midnight.

It is 25C outside. I'm not in the tropics nor in a dessert. It is the middle of The Netherlands. In Europe. A northern land known for ice skating in the winter. Most people do not associate The Netherlands with 30C degree summers, but I guess we will from now on.

I have never experienced these high temperatures in the night here. Considering that these are the coldest summers now. And we're the 'lucky' ones.

Scary.

The heatdome sits over Europe, and I have to move flats this week. Grateful for friends who just show up and carry heavy things, despite the heat. Worried about the next few days and having to explain the concept of wet bulb temperature over and over again.... I am so so grateful, and also don't want anyone to be unwell because of me.

Also, grieving for the world we could have had, if we had acted more decisively even 15 years ago.

It is insane and it was also predicted. And it will get worse. And worse. And it will keep getting worse. We are at the beginning of a planet that will keep heating. And yet, the vast majority of the middle class of the wealthy Northern nations refuse to act. They make no effort to organize against capitalism nor do they attempt to build solutions in their communities. They refuse to take any action at all. Instead they wait for the right-wing state to save them. The same right-wing state that is THE trusted partner of capitalism. They just go on living with no demands upon themselves. They continue feeding capitalism with their labor and consumption.

We refuse to act for our planet while we happily feed the fire with every aspect of our lives. Certainly the majority of the US are not seriously interested in a solution to the crisis because it will mean changing their lives. Easier to just let the worst case happen.
