Percussion Bitter Sweet is an album by jazz drummer Max Roach recorded in 1961, released on Impulse! Records.

Review by Scott Yanow

A classic album, and one of the finest of drummer Max Roach's very productive career. The illustrious sidemen (trumpeter Booker Little; trombonist Julian Priester; Eric Dolphy on alto, bass clarinet, and flute; tenorman Clifford Jordan; pianist Mal Waldron, and bassist Art Davis, in addition to some guest percussionists) all have opportunities to make strong contributions. Dolphy's pleading alto solo on "Mendacity" is particularly memorable. Abbey Lincoln has two emotional and very effective vocals, but it is the overall sound of the ensembles and the political nature of the music that make this set (along with Roach's Freedom Now Suite) quite unique in jazz history.

Speak, Brother, Speak! is a live album by American jazz drummer Max Roach featuring performances recorded in San Francisco in 1962 and released by the Fantasy label.

Allmusic awarded the album 3 stars stating: "The music is somewhere between hard bop and the avant-garde, and the musicians really push each other, although the results are not quite essential. Clifford Jordan fans in particular will find this to be an interesting set"

Aqui Se Habla Español by Johnny Richards Orchestra, released in 1967.

Nicely swingin' LP put together by the man who supervised some of Stan Kenton's best afro-cuban sessions. Richards is one of the most swinging, hard hitting bandleaders to come out of the post-swing era, and his handling of Latin material is always filled with a lot of fire, and a good sense of rhythm and soloing. Clifford Jordan is handling a number of the tenor solos here, and the rest of the band's pretty hot too. Tracks include "Viva Gordo", "Imprevu", "Pulque", "Manzanita", "Pata De Azul", and "Nada Mas" - Dusty Groove

Blowing In from Chicago is a studio album by the American jazz saxophonists Clifford Jordan and John Gilmore. It was released through Blue Note Records in July 1957. The recording was made on March 3, 1957 and the quintet assembled for the session features rhythm section Horace Silver, Curly Russell and Art Blakey.

The Penguin Jazz Guide suggests that the album may be “the neglected masterpiece of Blue Note hard bop”, noting that Gilmore plays in a style distinct from the freer approach he used with Sun Ra, and that Jordan solos powerfully but with “real thought and logic”. - Wikipedia

Clifford Jordan Big Band - Play What You Feel

Another P-Vine/Mapleshade re-release of a previously CD-only 90s release.

This one has Jordan achieving one of his dreams and touring with a large band, with too many players to mention (but includes Dizzy Reese), recorded live in NYC at Condon's.

Sound isn't perfect (this was supposedly a demo of sorts), but it's plenty good, and the playing is great.

Not available streaming; available at Mapleshade.

Clifford Jordan Quartet - Live at Ethell's

This P-Vine double-LP re-release of a 1987 Mapleshade CD is a fine example of a live set. Jordan's in typically great form, and he's joined by Kevin O'Connell (piano), Ed Howard (bass), and Vernel Fournier (drums).

P-Vine has put out three or four of these Jordan albums and they're all well worth picking up.
