25 minutes before worship this morning, an older congregant stopped by my office and told me she has a new boyfriend. I said 'this is good, right? "
She replied, "Well it's complicated."
My brain immediately jumped to "he must be married."
But no, it's worse. She's being catfished by someone pretending to be a celebrity.
Nothing in seminary prepared me for this situation.

Last night was a REALLY good night at the bar. Two very deep conversations, a few tears, and maybe some understanding. But the funniest part of the night was this exchange with an older guy:
Him: Are you a pastor?
Me (with a beer in hand): Yep, I’m the priest at St. Luke’s Episcopal.
Him: I thought you guys drank brandy.

Tonight I’m thinking about the delicious barbecues various parishioners would hold on or near the Fourth of July.
It was such a nice assortment of grilled meat and vegetables, salads (which might have been potato, fruit, jello, fruit and jello, or lettuce), sweets, ect.
If I had a house, I’d buy a grill and throw my own barbecue this summer.
When in burnout, you rarely know you're burnt out. I certainly didn't. I thought I hid my "issues" (now I know they were symptoms) and people around me misread my reactions producing terrible professional relationship results.
Here's one Christian pastor's story. He figured it out and was able to produce some wonderful results.

Seminary also doesn't prepare you for the time the kitchen moves against you while the front house manager keeps bringing you guest complaints that the dish they ordered wasn't salmon when they ordered the NY strip, and the heat's out because the facilities team just doesn't think they have the money for a new furnace.
It's no wonder 43% of clergy wanted to quit in 2023.
