This is my clay pipe fragment collection.

The loose ones are all from my garden (house is probably ex-farmhouse, built c. 1840). The ones in the bag are local, but from not-my-garden.

I like how they are all different thicknesses. A couple of fragments seem to be mouth-end ones. I do not have any bits that have enough intact bowl to identify much information/guess a date.

The single piece is my newest addition. I forgot about it temporarily as it was still drying from being washed.

I guess I'm sharing this because I find it interesting and probably someone on the Fediverse will find it interesting too. Or at least it'll break up doomscrolling.

Backstage, in the staff room, at the botanic gardens and admiring the collection of found objects from the site. A large, chunky clay pipe, suggesting tobacco was reasonably priced at the time this was made.

My two weeks off started yesterday, and Lin finishes today. Meanwhile, I’m kicking back with ‘Adlestrop’ by Gilroy Mere, released on @ClayPipeMusic in 2020.

The bowl of a clay pipe or "dúidin" in irish. This particular style of pipe was called a workman's pipe. It is of a heavier construction than the usual ones handed out at funerals and would have had a shorter stronger stem so that it could be held it between the teeth, leaving hands free for work.
The imprint on the bowl reads "Ben Nevis - Cutty"
County Donegal, Ireland.

An old clay pipe I found on one of my recent trips to the Clyde Estuary (top photo). Comparisons to one recovered from beside the Forth and Clyde Canal last year, which dates from the mid-1800s (lower photos), suggests it was made between 1720 and 1750, but I'm no expert on the subject.

Another clay pipe recovered from the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. A few of these are still turning up, and I was really lucky to find this one decorated with a tall ship a couple of evenings ago.
