Alles andere als ein „klassischer“ Western. Auch wenn mit Don Siegel ein Genreveteran Regie geführt hat und mit Clint Eastwood ein kommender Superstar ganz oben auf den Plakaten stand. Es ist allein Shirley MacLaine, die diesen Film zusammenhält. Sie ist das Zentrum, der Störfaktor, das Maultier, das den Regeln des Genres nicht gehorcht. Don Siegel wusste, dass er eine Figur braucht, die Eastwoods Fassade sprengt. Und mit MacLaine bekam er genau das – eine scharfe, ironische, unberechenbare Geheimwaffe. (ARD)

Die große Leinwand ist einfach nicht zu ersetzen, um diese italienische Oper als das ewige Kunstwerk zu begreifen, als das sie als Meilenstein in die Filmgeschichte der Menschheit eingegangen ist.
