Yesterday was International Fanworks Day! Here is my tale of Wobbly Claude, full of love.

maiji: Wobbly Claude full of love

[image: Photo of a handmade felt doll of Claude C. Kenni from Star Ocean 2. He has little blue shank-button eyes, pink oval blushes on his cheeks, and a pink sewn X for a mouth. He's wearing his recognizable red headband, a little black shirt, white pants and tan shoes with various green, black and white cut-pattern shapes on them. He's lying on an olive-green jacket with the iconic Pangalactic Federation shoulder patch design.]Yesterday was International Fanworks Day, so orange and I got together to nerd out working on fanfics and fanart! It was also discount chocolate day the day after V-day, so we also went hunting for discount chocolate. I wore my Claude-themed cardigan (a thrift store find that I jazzed up with a cosplay patch from Quid Vis) and brought Wobbly Claude along to celebrate. We had so much fun listening to '90s JRPG soundtracks and looking up silly stream-of-consciousness things and chatting and snacking. Nerd nerd nerd, hahah.I made Wobbly Claude in maybe 2009-ish. At the time, orange had found some cute patterns on the internet and was very enthusiastic about sewing custom dolls, so I gamely joined in and we had a craft day doodling and measuring and sewing and poking ourselves with needles. As you can see, my cutting and sewing were rather wobbly, but as orange says, "Wobbly Claude but full of love". Yes!![Photo of hand holding Wobbly Claude. The cut pieces for the designs on his shoes are literally floating milimetres off from the actual shoe bases.]Back then, I lost steam by the time I got to his shoes and just glued the patterns on. Even after my Star Ocean 2 passion went into hibernation, I couldn't bear to get rid of him, so he hung around various places in my room, his shoes constantly falling off here and there until I finally got fed up and shoved them into a box. Now that he has returned to glory!!! in my heart, it was hilarious to discover that over a decade later most of the glue had dried up and separated, and the pieces were clinging on through sheer static electricity... but nothing had been lost! This past week I spent a few evenings sewing everything onto his shoes more properly, motivated by the fact that I didn't want them to fall apart and get ingested by orange's cat. It felt a little reverse Shoemaker's Elves, haha.[Photo of hand holding one of Wobbly Claude's shoes, the green pieces stitched on while the black and white pieces are still in progress. A red tin full of spools of coloured thread and other sewing supplies is visible in the background.][Photo of Wobbly Claude being held upside down at an angle so you can see one of the finished shoes, with all the patterns stitched in place. His other foot is bare.][Photo of fluffy orange and white tabby cat curiously sniffing Wobbly Claude's arm.]I also showed my efforts fixing the shoes to my mom. She's been on a knitting kick for a while and enthusiastically said, "Do you want me to make him some more clothes?" She used to make knit clothing for my teddy bears when I was a kid, including lots of cute dresses. I remembered that there's a PA in the game where Rena, Celine and Precis imagine Claude in different outfits, and one of them is a ridiculously frilly dress. So I sent her a screenshot of the pixelly sprite and asked her to please use it as her inspiration. She said, "Why is this so blurry?" and I was like "The original image is tiny, I had to zoom in a ton..."[Photo of hand a hand pulling up Wobbly Claude's shirt to show his belly, which is then connected to the white of his pants/legs at the waist.]Wobbly Claude's shirt is actually removable, but I'm a bit concerned about doing so because his head is so big and floppy... so the dress would just go on top of everything he's already wearing.Anyways, I'm excited to see what my mom comes up with! If it works out, stay tuned for followup Wobbly Claude fashion show maybe some time this year.

maiji: Power couple (Claude and Precis, spoilers for SO2/R endings)

[Image: Illustrated magazine cover parody. Masthead reads “FSO (fantastic space odyssey) January SD370”. It features an older Precis and Claude in a posed couples shot, Precis leaning back against Claude and Claude with one arm around her, smiling out at the viewer. Surrounding headlines read: A Chisato Madison exclusive: Dr. Precis F. Neumann & Captain Claude C. Kenni - The Federation’s Hottest Power Couple. “Robotics brought us together”: how they found true love on an underdeveloped planet—and saved the universe. Bonus pinups. His & Hers: Best sword customizations / Top machinist tips & tricks. Ecclesia Prize—our predictions for the engineering genius shortlist. Surprising benefits of hot pepper jam!]A silly great random idea I got a little carried away with. With these kinds of things I always feel like, wow I really rushed this! But also boy, why am I spending so much time on this! I came up with a bunch more headlines but things started to get too cluttered. I also talked myself out of drawing the bonus pinups. (For now...??)Claude and Precis is another SO2 pairing I adore! We all know I’m a sucker for Claude, but I do feel this couple is super overlooked. They complement each other so well and they're so cute and mutually supportive, and their endings together are two of my favourites. This magazine cover is largely canon-compliant and based on their Ending 2, my favourite back-to-the-Pangalactic Federation scenario. The year should probably be SD369 according to the game, but that doesn’t seem realistic to me, and since it’s January that’s extra early so I bumped it to 370, and honestly no one will notice or care but I’m a big neeeeerrrd.Spoilers below the cut. [READ-MORE] The Claude and Precis Ending 2 is dramatically titled “Triumphant Return” (or “Triumphant Homecoming”) in the voice actor scripts. My friend who is an orange calls it the power couple ending, which is the best summary. In it, we see Claude and Precis chatting on the bridge of a Federation ship, congratulating each other. We learn: it’s been three years; Precis is now Dr. Neumann, and she’s won the galaxy’s most prestigious engineering award, the Ecclesia Prize; Claude is now Captain Kenni, and was recently named official ambassador to Expel; they supported each other throughout all this time and thanks to their combined efforts, Expel has officially joined the Federation!! And they’re about to land there to continue their work!! Whoo whoo triumphant return indeed. While it’s probably not “canon canon” (since everyone seems to assume Claude and Rena / Ashton and Precis are default story couples), we actually see many hints of this ending in what we know is canon. The Blue Sphere sequel uses Precis going to Earth with Claude as the core foundation of its storyline (which it mashes up with several other endings, and other things, so it technically isn't any one of the SO2 endings), and other Star Ocean games set well into the future tell us a Dr. Neumann's invention caused Expel to be invited to join the Federation, and that Claude also went down in history for what he did related to Expel becoming a Federation member. To me, this couple is only magnitudes more amazing when you realize that their other Ending 1, which is equally in-character and believable, is titled something like “We’re the same as always”, and features househusband Claude making Precis tea while she blows stuff up. I love it so much. You can read some takes on it by Anonfeather and me here and here.[/READ-MORE]In conclusion: this whole post is actually the result of me wanting to draw Claude in an apron and accidentally getting derailed. I’ll try again later…

[READ-MORE][images: 1) The photo by itself. 2) Same photo but the background is the fields of Expel with blue sky, mountains and grass. 3) Same photo but Ink lineart only.][/READ-MORE]I can’t access my O.G. dream team (Claude, Dias, Ernest, Bowman) in my New Game+ playthrough, so my fast-paced fighter team is now this!! A.k.a. (in my head) “Claude and his hyper, bossy sisters”. I just started the Cave of Trials/Maze of Tribulations again, and we’re doing quite well so far. I don’t even have everyone in Bloody Armor yet! (And Precis can’t wear Bloody Armor anyways.)Compared to the other team,  The sound of battle is much higher-pitched, with more fun energy. It’s really amusing when I’m wallopping serious deep-voiced bosses. Overall, they’re slower and don’t swarm anywhere near as heavily. Chisato is usually nearby since she’s a similar type of melee fighter, but Claude really has to chase Precis and Welch around the field to Sword of Life them (thank goodness for Head Splitter/Helmetbreak). Welch also has a habit of being in the air like 50%+ of the time with her knock-off Lenneth Valkyrie attack Nibelungaling, making her almost always out of range. (Hearing her yelling "Nibelung Nantokaaaa!!"/"Nibelung Something-or-Anotherrrr!!" constantly while I'm trying to find her to heal her because I thought she was on the ground is hilarious.) So Claude is frequently lobbing healing items over/up at her. On the topic of lobbing items: the above combined with the fact that New Game+ equals zero cashflow problems and a constantly overflowing inventory means that I’ve found myself being much less stingy about items in battle. So Claude is throwing much higher quality stuff, like syrups and Wonder Drugs and even Angel Statuettes (I have so many Angel Statuettes…) than Rena (okay, I) let him use in all my previous lifetimes, hahaha. Also I actually remember that assault formation exists! And I remember to use it!! In short, this team is better taken care of and supported, though Claude is probably more harried than he’s ever been. Some thoughts on these gals! [READ-MORE] Chisato: My opinion of her hasn’t changed much since I was a kid. She was always fun and cool in my book. She can be a bit zany from both a story and gameplay perspective, likely because the developers wanted to make her memorable since she’s the last person you can recruit. But I appreciate her spirit and her focus on truth and justice in her work; how that gets used to help you uncover more about the history of Nede and the Ten Wise Men; and how we get to see a bit of her relationship with her mom too. Also, I read an amazing fanfic, Federation Morning by khaki knight, which gave me an even greater appreciation of Chisato and her skillset in the context of the gamestory. Precis: My opinion of her has evolved over the years. I always thought she was funny, but now that I’m much older, she’s a character I’ve come to respect. She’s often perceived as immature, ditzy, over-the-top boy-(well, Claude)-crazy, and depicted that way in adaptations... but she's actually really smart, positive, resourceful, self-aware, and her straightforwardness and honesty are refreshing. I think the more natural English translations of the remakes, and the presence of the nuanced Japanese voices and upgraded portraits, help make it easier to recognize and appreciate her merits beyond being simple comic relief. And of course I also like her because she’s very supportive to Claude (her presence really improves the mood of the Tournament, IMO). It’s sweet when you can return it to her in that North City PA (assuming you pick the nice responses instead of the dense joke ones. See “Precis staying cheerful in North City” at the end of this post.). And I love their endings together; their space one is probably my favourite of all the back-to-the-Federation endings. Their relationship feels healthy and positive! Even in spite of hot pepper jam lmaoWelch: Prior to recently, my feelings about Welch were, “I don’t really care”, so this is the longest commentary because it was my biggest surprise. She didn’t exist in the original SO2, and I first met her in SO3, where her appearance is almost exactly the same but her personality and role are totally different, much more of a general NPC. When they added her to the Second Evolution remake with this new over-the-top persona, it felt like a really weird shoehorning thing to me. I had no interest in interacting more with a joke meta character whose humour seemed primarily built around being obnoxiously intimidating. I watched some videos of her in English, but never got her in SE myself. The only thing I did was watch her recruitment scene, see what happens if you say yes to her joining, and then decline and move on. After recruiting her in SO2R... she’s still a joke meta character, but I do like her a little more now. I think what made the biggest difference is being able to access the Japanese in SO2R. Welch’s seiyuu, Hanba Tomoe, is fantastic. (Fun fact: She was Precis in the Star Ocean EX anime. Hot pepper jam forever!!) I love the dynamic tonal shifts that she brings to this role, and how she speeds up or slows down her lines to create a really engaging performance. It makes Welch fun and interesting to listen to instead of grating. Another reason is that several of her scenes with Claude are actually really cute. Her dragging him to a doujin event and getting him into doujinshi (translated as fanfic in English) is entertaining, of course, but there are also some other moments I enjoyed, like when she actually starts to thank him when he tries to help her. (I suppose basically if you’re nice to Claude, then I like you. I am a very simple squirrel.) Her L’Aqua beach scene with Claude, in particular, is actually really charming in Japanese. Partly due to translators’ choices, the voice actors ended up making delivery decisions that result in the mood being rather different in key parts. So you can see/hear what I mean:L’Aqua beach scene in English from Second Evolution (this person nicely recorded all the PSP Second Evolution ones for Claude; the link goes directly to where the Welch one starts)In Japanese SO2R (Ueda Yuuji as Claude)  In English, Claude's "Welch?" sounds so "...why the heck is it you" 🤣 but in Japanese he’s much more welcoming/receptive. Also, in Japanese Welch’s lines have a more sincere-sounding tone when she comes in and starts chatting with Claude.  The game they play, “I Spy” in English, is Shiritori. I think what the translators did was pretty clever to make it work in English; but that said, this is definitely a situation where tweaking is necessary and things being lost in the conversion are inevitable. In shiritori, you have to come up with a word that starts with a syllable matching the ending of the previous word. Welch starts with uchuu (universe); Claude replies with usagi (bunny). Welch responds with ginga (Milky Way); Claude struggles a bit and comes up with garasu (glass). Welch then says "suki" ("I like you"). So Welch went from everything in the universe, zooming in on the galaxy, zooming in on Claude specifically. Claude is just trying to keep up in the game with random words, ahha. At the end, English Claude has to say “*sigh* Yeah, yeah”, and unsurprisingly Spike Spencer does a take which makes him sound annoyed/irritated/resigned. A very reasonable decision when you’re given the script we see in English. But in Japanese, it’s more like “Ahh, got it/I gotcha” - “I understand what you mean/what you want!” And you can see in both Second Evolution and SO2R the portrait is a smiling Claude, and it’s more positive and playful which is how the Japanese voice actors tackle it.  The final line after the camera pans up to the moon is also special—I don’t believe any other L’Aqua scenes have it. Claude's thought in Japanese is something like, "And then/this time/now, I'll...!" and I'm like what?? Now you’ll what??? In short, the English plays her up as the joke character; the Japanese plays her more as a character. The Welch and Claude ending is also cute. I honestly like it more than any of the Rena and Claude endings. It’s especially amusing because of how much of a hard time she gave him when they first met (and by “gave him a hard time” I mean “completely terrorized him”), and their ending together is like… Claude figured out how to game the system, hahah. At this point fans pretty much assume Welch is in actuality a 4D being, so it creates an interesting dynamic/narrative of something like a god getting attached to someone in this created world more than they expected to, kind of like SO3's spoiler spoiler vibes.[/READ-MORE]

I also worked in a bit of calligraphy practice! Hope it looks okay; calligraphy is hard. This illustration is inspired by Claude and Dias’ new Second Story R ultimate weapons! They are, respectively, “Azure Sword” Planeteer [Destruction] and “Flashing Blade” Hachimentei [Strength]. The words in quote marks are the weapon descriptors/titles, which are my translation attempts from the original Japanese. The official translation dropped them. I was like aww, but they're cool… But they’re also a lot shorter character count-wise in Japanese, so maybe that’s why we lost them in English, haha. The special kanji, or [bracketed words], appear at the end of the name after you upgrade the weapons to even more ultimate forms. Because ultimacy is endless these days. I’m super into poetic/symbolic/thematic names and translation contortions, and the names of the weapons these two use have a lot of that kind of stuff. For those interested, I made an overview of all of them, with commentary!.Something I didn’t mention in that post is fun Buddhist connections for the special kanji. 壊 (translated as “Destruction”) appears in the term 壊劫 ekou - “kalpa of destruction”. A kalpa, often translated as eon or aeon, is essentially a massive time period measuring the cyclical rise and annihilation of worlds. This kalpa is the third, the age in which the universe is destroyed. Sometimes it's also translated as "kalpa of disintegration". 剛 (translated as “Strength”) appears in the term 金剛 kongo - “vajra”. A vajra is a conceptual weapon so powerful, made of a material so brilliant and hard, that it can cut through anything, including the delusion that blocks you from enlightenment. It’s usually referenced or envisioned metaphorically as a diamond or a thunderbolt.

We’re ready for the next boss battle. *arrow that reads: Rena still won’t let him use anything except for berries*Dias is sweating bullets and standing behind Claude, eyeing him with a very nervous expression. Ernest, also standing behind Claude and sweating nervously, looks over his shoulder at Bowman.Bowman, still in the background flying upside down through the air obliviously: ha ha ha Neck Snap![/READ-MORE]In the PS1 days: One of the reasons Claude, Ernest, Dias and Bowman were my dream team is because I like my battles with fast-paced chaos. All four of them are frontline fighters with short- and long range attacks that allow them to fly across the entire field.  However, this team configuration was not considered optimal for a variety of reasons. The biggest one is that there is no healer. Players also had varying complaints about things like: Dias’ low defence; Ernest’s special moves leaving him open to hits; Bowman’s slow normal attack speed; et cetera. (As main character, Claude is designed to be one of your best fighters, so complaints about him in battle were uncommon.) Additionally, the way I played and used the game AI meant that all four of them had a tendency to swarm the enemy with attack spams. This meant everyone was concentrated in one place, especially with a boss. If there was a localized area attack, they’d all get hit at the same time.  Because both Claude and Bowman had moves where they could heal themselves (Energy Sword and Secret Medicine, respectively), they were usually OK. I almost always controlled Claude, so I would leave Bowman to his own devices, and heal Dias and Ernest with items when I needed to. However, Little Me was not particularly good at paying attention to people’s HP. So I often didn’t notice they were dying until, well, they were really dying or dead. Or paralyzed, poisoned, stoned, etc. So, Dias and Ernest died a lot. Additionally, Little Me was very cheap and had a tendency of hoarding items in my inventory. But I usually had lots of berries and they were very easy to replenish. So, that was what I’d use. Even if I had significantly better healing items.  Today: I talk about HP Drain on the Eternal Sphere/Aeterna and Bloody Armor here. (I feel like the actual experience of wearing something like Bloody Armor in real life would be pretty terrible.) Claude’s Energy Sword, Sword of Life in the remakes, has been upgraded in SO2R to be absolutely ridiculous. It recovers HP not just for him but also nearby allies, and even attacks the enemy at the same time. You can now play Claude as a very mobile, high damage-dealing healer. Basically this little 19 year old on-call medic running around the battlefield after anyone who’s dying. I haven’t noticed much difference in my experience of Dias, whose attacks were always strong and fast, nor Bowman, aside from the latter seeming to heal himself less frequently in my game…? But Ernest is fantastic now, and combined with the range of his whip, it’s great. He certainly seems faster, at times killing things across the field before even Dias or Claude can reach them. This team still has a tendency to swarm, practically running on top of each other trying to attack the enemy. Before this was a bad thing—in fact while playing SO2R I had an instance of all four of them getting Tractor Beamed together and dumped upside down on their heads right as the battle ended, which cracked me up. But now, it’s rare because they’re all so fast and break enemies frequently, and in any case the close proximity now also means everyone is in range for Sword of Life’s healing spirals. And then the enemy often breaks at the same time, and everyone continues spamming attacks nonstop.  Despite being a multi-Fol-liannaire in SO2R, I am still very cheap and hoard my items. I continue to sell things or use them for Item Creation when my inventory gets too full, instead of using them in battle. Old habits die hard. Blueberry bonanza for everyone. Yes, yes, there’s now Assault Formation, and you can now summon a bunch of all-party heals via Rena, Noel, Opera without them having to actually be in the active party. The problem is 1) there’s a recovery time for the Assault Formation heals before you can use them again and 2) honestly I just keep forgetting it exists and default to Claude Sword of Life-ing and throwing blueberries. This comic is actually outdated now, because I did more Remaking and got the entire dream team HP Drain on their weapons with Bloody Armor, so all four of them get to be invincible (unless they have a hard time reaching something...) and constantly dying in battle. Thus I blasted through Fienel and the final boss five times and am now blasting through the Fun City Arena, raid bosses, etc. With the periodic Sword of Life and berries, of course.

maiji: How I got into/work with ink (an artist's perspective)

This is a cleaned-up version of a post from November 14, 2018 on tumblr in response to a question about how I use inks in my artwork. Sharing in case it is helpful for others interested in this medium! How I got into itIt’s only been in the last maybe five or so years that I’ve actually started to pay more attention to art supplies. In the case of ink, it really started with fountain pens.Long story short, one of my professors was really into them and let me try one of his vintage pens, and I was vaguely interested. Then my best friend really got into them, and I tagged along to a fountain pen show (shoutout to Scriptus Toronto!!). From there it was a slow burn over a period of months from “this is neat” to “WOWWW OKAY I GUESS I’M REALLY INTO THIS NOW”.It was a (relatively, for me) quick entry once I discovered the online fountain pen community. These people are incredibly passionate, highly articulate, and best of all, document EVERYTHING. I found the ink reviews especially spectacular and that’s probably what hooked me the most.A few other things that helped in the appeal factor:I have a tendency to grip writing implements excessively hard, which is bad for my hands.  A number of people mentioned that fountain pens helped them to alleviate this because generally you don’t need/want to apply pressure when using them. I’ve found it has helped, and also has enabled me to reduce unnecessary pressure even when writing or drawing with more conventional pens (ballpoints etc.).I’ve always been interested in forms that combine words and images. This merges literary and artistic worlds in a very clear way.I’ve been on a long personal journey of wanting to incorporate much more Chinese/Taiwanese/East Asian heritage and cultural traditions into my work. Thus, I’ve been gravitating towards things emphasizing brush, ink, water, elements of calligraphy and… not sure if spontaneity is the word I want, but things that help me overthink less when I draw, and get better at letting go. How I work with inkMy (main) toolsFude de mannen: This is basically a fountain pen that mimics a brush for Asian calligraphy. It has a bent nib that enables you to change stroke thickness by varying your hand angle. I love this pen so much I got a second one so I could have a different colour (I use washi tape to help me tell the pens apart). You can see more of it in the video interview I did with PindotPress.Brush pen: A pen that is a brush. A number of companies make them; I use the Pentel Pocket Brush because it’s the first one I tried and I liked it a lot. It’s smooth, has great line variation, and the tip has yet to fail me. (Although the cap started falling apart, hence all the tape on my first one.) I currently have three: one for permanent black, one for permanent red, and one because I couldn’t resist buying a coloured version of the pen.Glass dip pen: These dip pens are pretty, but what's awesome is that they are super easy and fast to clean. I can quickly switch between multiple colours of bottled inks. The grooves in the nib hold ink, so you need to slightly turn the pen as you go to access all the ink. You can also get a wider stroke by slanting the pen and using the side of the glass nib. It’s not that easy to control your lines, but I actually like this because it creates a lot of happy accidents. And “oops well damn" accidents, but like I said I’m trying to cultivate the whole “learn to let go" mindset.Waterbrush: Basically a brush that carries its own water reservoir. I’ve used a few different brands but I find I like the Pentel Aquash (small brush tip) the best. Some people fill them with ink like a brush pen, but I’ve not really done that. (I did it once with a different brand that was harder to open/refill and I got mad.) I use it to paint with the inks.Pencil I got for free: Unless I'm doodling, I usually draw base pencils of some sort. Even if it’s just a very rough, light sketch or a quick thumbnail on another sheet of paper. Every so often I get an inquiry asking what special kind of pencil I use, but I’m afraid they’re just normal pencils rolled with recycled newsprint. I got free samples like a million years ago and I have been using them forever. (I think I’m finally down to my last three.)Eraser: I’ve been trying a few different ones but it takes me forever to work through an eraser. You want it to be able to pick up the lines without requiring you to scrub and take the ink too or destroying the fibres of your paper. This one actually works pretty well. If you’re really curious you can see the non-destroyed packaging here!Toilet or tissue paper: Something to pick up the water. This is my “undo button” in real life when I’m painting/using the waterbrush. Also I drown everything with water so it’s very important.Ink swatches: Every time I get a new ink I make a sample and add it here. It’s great for colour palettes and when I’m looking at other inks and trying to decide whether to get it or not - e.g., is it different from everything I already have? (Although my definition of “different” is very generous…) I don’t actually own all these inks; some were samples from friends. I’ve found I tend to gravitate towards very complex, nuanced neutrals. (This sounds so sophisticated but when you see them all it once it’s like. Oh. Apparently I like shades of grey, brown, and other hard to classify "muddy” or in-between colours lmao. But more on that in a bit.) Lately I’ve been getting glittery inks because they’re fun and they add a magical dimension to the physical piece. Here is my current selection of inks - on the shelf to the immediate left of my laptop and my head as I am typing this right now. The box at the bottom left is all the samples. My approachIn my mind, I broadly classify my approach into two categories: “dry” and “wet”.“Dry” - ink only, no water. I have pretty unsteady hands and hate “inking” - if we think of inking as an exercise in achieving a “clean”, controlled line drawing with consistent line width/stroke thickness, neatness, etc. So I love pens that support me in what I think of as "controlled loss of control" - wide variations in brush width and stroke character. Brush pens and fude de mannen pens are perfect for this. They have lines that offer a wide range of dynamic, organic, and textural opportunity.  My Inktober illustrations fall into this category. A few examples below, followed by links to the full set.Inktober 2017 - fude de mannenInktober 2018 - brush pen“Wet” - Basically I blob water around. Depending on when I do it (before, with/during, after the application of the ink), you can get different results. The water causes the ink to bleed, semi-watercolour-like, and can be used for shading, environmental effects etc. For obvious reasons, this works best with non-waterproof inks (which the vast majority of fountain pen inks are), but you can do this even with waterproof inks. Just let the ink hit water before it has a chance to soak into the paper and you can get cool effects! And you can also do it with other pens too, not just fountain pen inks. Examples:Tiles of Toronto urban sketch seriesRaizen and Hokushin doodlesArikoto from OokuAs you might imagine, this is really great for on-the-go drawings, because you just need a pen (or a couple of pens) and a waterbrush. The “wet” approach is also where the very complex inks that look “boring” (greys, taupes etc.) are just complete magic. When the dye elements separate, other colours emerge, and you get really wonderful textural effects and rings of colour where the ink pools and dries. Diamine Earl Grey is a colour I’ve mentioned several times that I LOOOVE because it separates into blues, browns, purples, even pinkish tones. It’s a gorgeous ink. You can see some examples and closeups here.Another colour that does this really powerfully is Sailor Jentle Rikyucha. It’s a dark tea brown-green that separates very easily into pale blue-greens and more and has amazing tonal and textural qualities. The Tendril Wreath illustration here really shows this. For the most part I look at things I like and then experiment to figure out what happens. After working with the same tools for a while, you get a sense of how the different elements might react and respond naturally.  The Genjimonogatari series employs both dry and wet extensively and is an example of the experimenting and playing I’m doing. I keep finding new aspects to the inks I thought I knew, and making “interesting” mistakes. And trying to fix them as I go with varying levels of success. But I’m always learning! One more thing about this hobbyI feel compelled to finish with some talk about the pure aesthetic appeal, or the MULTIPLE LEVELS OF FUN I get out of these inks. Not just the colour, not just how the ink behaves, but… the name of the ink as well! Similar to how the presentation of a dish is part of the experience, the name of an ink adds so much to my enjoyment of it. My least favourite ink names are [standard adjective]+[standard colour name]. My favourite ones are really convoluted with literary and poetic references, I just love them. Asian fountain pen inks I find tend to do this especially well - partly because of how much you can pack into how few syllables, I suppose. It makes me sad that a lot of sites don’t include the original names, often referencing them with just a number, though I understand it is difficult to translate. But I learn a lot with these names as a starting point! For example, bookpenscom #25 Zhenjing is a gorgeous warm brown with generous gold flakes. To understand the name, it took a bit of back and forth with my parents to look it up and then interpret the complex line of poetry. It was a fun and fascinating exercise.  The source is “18 Songs of a Nomad Flute” by Liu Shang about the poet Lady Wenji/Cai Yan/Tsai Yen. The phrase “zhenjing” conveys an internal tremor, shock/shudder. A great name can’t save an ink I don’t like, but a good name elevates an ink I do like even more. It can be really inspiring for making stuff. For example, take Pen BBS Mirrorflower Watermoon. I adore the colour of this ink - it’s a very subtle grey-pale green with silver flakes. I used it heavily in the Hokushin fanart “Northern Deity” (you can see it here with photos of the sparkly). The name is actually highly recognizable if you’re familiar with classic East Asian literature/poetry. I read it out loud to my parents with no context other than “this is the name of one of my favourite ink colours” while they were eating dinner and they both said at the same time, “I know this! DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER!” which cracked me up.  It’s a very Buddhist idiom or phrase referring to the illusory nature of things, likening it to the reflection of a flower in a mirror or the reflection of the moon in water.I hope this helps others in exploring and playing with this lovely medium!

maiji: Welcome, Dias!

[images: Comic with digital inks and rough painted colours, titled “Welcome, Dias! a true story (sort of, every time I play Rena's story)" by maiji. It is a short story about the artist's gameplay shenanigans every time Dias is recruited, translated into a narrative. Full story and detailed descriptions in the text below.]Full Transcript [READ-MORE]Welcome, Dias! Part 1 - a true story (sort of, every time I play Rena's story)Rena: Yay! Dias finally joined the party! At last!Rena: *holding up an egg and grains* Dias, let’s cook something!Dias: I don’t know how to cook. [Knife, Recipe, Keen Eye skills level: 0]*Rena points at Claude, making him write textbooks for Dias to learn skills*Rena: Dias, let’s go fishing!Dias: I don’t know how to fish. [Biology, Item Knowledge skills level: 0]*once again, Rena makes Claude write textbooks for Dias, repeat ad infinitum. The pile of textbooks grows bigger*Claude: *looking frazzled at Dias as he frantically writes textbooks* How the heck did you survive when you were travelling alone??Dias: Mm? *chewing on raw meat and grass*Welcome, Dias! Part 2 - a true story (sort of, every time I play Rena's story)Claude: *wiping his brow and still trying to write textbooks as fast as he can*Dias: *waiting for Claude to finish writing more textbooks. He notices a random book lying around that he hasn’t read yet**reads the book, which turns out to be The Great Star Ocean*Someone else (probably another party member): Huh? When’d their relationship level get so high? He literally just joined downstairs…??The end.[/READ-MORE]As seen here:[status screen showing Dias' Friendship Levels. He has 3.5 full hearts for Claude, 1.75 full hearts for Rena, and 0 hearts for everyone else.]This is essentially what I do whenever I recruit Dias into my party in every version of this game (aside from Fishing being a new thing in SO2R). Honestly, the main reason this is "sort of" a true story is because Rena didn’t actually make Claude write the books after Dias joined. Rena made Claude write them way back when I was in Linga and Hilton because, as mentioned previously, I was full on prepping for Dias' recruitment. So Claude’s been forced to lug all these textbooks around the whole time, hahaha. Some commentary on the book-based relationship manipulation system. [READ-MORE]Ocean of Stars (original PS1 translation)/The Great Star Ocean (SE and SO2R translation) is of course one of Claude’s two relationship books. In the original game, this was the one for romance values, and the other is Planet of the Winds/Planet of Wind which was for friendship values. Book effects were unidirectional and only changed the affection/relationship values for the character reading the book.[screenshot showing successful item creation of two copies of The Great Star Ocean. The description reads: A book written by Claude. "The patrol ship Palma raced across the deep ocean of stars that spread all around..." Effect: Friendship Level with Claude will become 28.]SO2R seems to have collapsed the two types of values into a single “friendship” level, and it’s bidirectional now: reading the book affects one relationship score for the writer and the reader at the same time. So instead of affecting specifically romance values, Ocean of Stars/The Great Star Ocean now gives a massive overall relationship boost at this relatively early part of the game. Based on the description of the item, it also looks like they maintained the mechanism that instead of giving points, it actually sets the relationship to a specific number of points. So if Dias and Claude’s relationship grows more (which it already has since I’ve passed several story scenes and PAs beyond the Frontlines), if this book is used again, it would actually reset them back down to a lower score. Doesn’t really matter for Dias and Claude since they only have one ending, but I wonder how they chose to treat situations where two characters had multiple possible endings? They used to be based on the two different types of values, and whether the characters’ individual scores were lower/higher or equal, but it seems like that’s gone now. The only thing I can think of is that the endings will now be points based? So some endings will be considered higher points? My guess.Anyways, for those interested, here’s what the points look like visually. This first screen is when you first meet Dias in Mars, you can only see his score with Rena, who he's known for at least a decade.[status screen showing Dias' Friendship Levels when he's a guest character in Mars Village. He has about 1.5 hearts for Rena.]This screen is when you officially recruit Dias. I went back to grab the screenshot from before I had slapped him with a ton of books (seen at the top of this post). [status screen showing Dias' Friendship Levels when he officially joins at the Lacour Frontlines. He has about .25 heart for Claude, 1.75 full hearts for Rena, and 0 hearts for everyone else.]You can see he doesn’t like anyone except for Rena and Claude. Literally nothing for anyone else. As an interesting point of comparison, his friendship level with Claude visually appears to be the same as Leon's starting values for the characters he's closest to. You can see Leon's starting values here - this is guest Leon in a Rena game, so I can't keep him.[status screen showing Leon's Friendship Levels when he is a guest during the Hoffman Ruins. He has .25 of a heart for Claude, Rena, Bowman, and 0 hearts for everyone else.] Thanks to goofing off with some items earlier, I know for sure that two full hearts = 16 points, so one full heart is 8 points.  Ocean of Stars now sets the store to a walloping 28 points, which is what you see for Claude in the first Dias screen in this post. Thus, that tiny sliver on Claude when Dias first joins should be about 2 points, and Dias' starting value with Rena is about 14 points. At 28 points, it brings in those little floating heart icons around the character. I assume it means 1) one character will now berserk when the other dies in battle, and 2) their ending is guaranteed unless I consciously mess it up further and introduce some serious competition. Fear not, I’m keeping a careful eye on this. Though at this point there's essentially zero chance of anyone else catching up since Dias and Claude are almost at max hearts now, hahah. (And even if that somehow happens, I already have two copies of Planet of the Winds ready to slap a reset to 16 points.)I haven’t actually been able to confirm 1) yet because my dream team has been doing too well in battle and completely destroyed the bosses during the battles where I remembered Dias hilariously dying a lot (and getting hit with a million status effects at the same time)... Maybe later. I do remember the Field of Might boss is one where I used to get it because Claude AI would keep running into the instant death attack, so we shall see![/READ-MORE]

Last SO2R post for today (I think 😂) - a direct visual comparison for Prince Clother and Ensign Kenni.

maiji: Prince Clother T. Cross and Ensign Claude C. Kenni (Second Story R)

[image: collage of two screenshots close-cropped to the speaking character's portrait: one with Prince Clother T. Cross and the other with Claude C. Kenni from Star Ocean The Second Story R, both in front-facing portraits, with opposite hands raised to their chest.]For fun/my nerdy reference: the Prince of Cross and the Hero of Light from Star Ocean 2, who apparently look eerily similar. I haven't seen any direct visual comparisons, so these are the two closest portraits I've been able to grab in my Rena game. You can decide for yourself how similar they actually look... in Second Story R, anyways. This is coincidentally as close as I think we can get to a nice mirrored shot both visually and thematically: Clother/Chris (I absolutely refuse to call him Clauzer or Clyde) is in the Cross church; Claude is standing in front of Lacour Castle. This is Claude's only forward-facing portrait. In all his other illustrations, his face is usually at an angle so you don't get as direct of a comparison for how Kajimoto Yukihiro has chosen to render their faces. His expression is also much more serious than Clother's, but I don't think Clother actually has an equivalent expression in the scenarios we see (he mostly just gets nervous or sad). Mind you, Clother's portrait was a later update to the game, so I haven't seen the PA in Hilton where Claude actually meets him in my own playthrough, and I'm not sure what they've decided to allow him to emote there. Here are some side-by-side screens of their sprites from that Claude Hilton PA. These are screencrapped from this wonderful gamer's recording; again, at the time this gamer was playing, Clother's portrait wasn't available yet.[image: collage of three screenshots of Clother and Claude 1) running into each other by the tent of a shop in Hilton, with little !! emotes over their heads; 2) same scene but Claude is now turned to face the viewer so you can see their sprites from the front; 3) the two of the standing back to back in dimly lit bar.]I was a little irritated, actually, to discover I can steal multiple General's Rings from Clother in Second Story R, because my memory of the original game was that Claude's Hilton PA was the only way to get that ring - that he gives it to Claude after they hang out. But my memory could very well be wrong. For more fun, some comments from people in the castle:[image: collage screenshot of Rena talking to a maid in Cross Castle by the stairs. The maid is saying, "Oh my goodness. Your boyfriend looks a lot like our prince! What's that? He's not your boyfriend?]No he's my big brother's boyfriend. Don't bother him. Also a very rude tourist:[image: collage screenshot of Rena leading the party and talking to a Young Woman standing by a registration counter in Cross Castle. The Young Woman says "I just had an audience with the prince, and he is so... gorgeous! Your boyfriend just looks so plain in comparison." If Claude is the party leader, she says "I just had an audience with the prince, and he is so... gorgeous! You just look so plain in comparison."]I was affronted that if you set Claude as your party leader, she actually says it to his face! Can you believe the rudeness of this woman!! Rena pickpocketed her immediately after. And of course, the developers threw in a completely new massive painting of Clother hanging on the wall of the registration area for the entire public to see, that Claude can just stand under. But it's just his sprite and the picture and comment on it is already everywhere as one of the remake's new features, so I haven't bothered screencapping it.

Just finished a #StarOcean2 fic that is all about my feels and nostalgia for this game. Lots of easter eggs! (Not the melodrama illustrated fic I've been bellyaching about. That one's still in progress 😂)
