Mom got her brand new #MacBook #Neo today and I went over there to help her set it up.
For some reason, the 2020 M1 MacBook Air of mine that she was using (that I still have an admin logon for), the one that I was trying to transfer data from to her new computer, got mad at me and locked me out of my account for an hour. π
I didn't think to bring a data cable; I was just going to transfer information over her wireless network, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I did not let her have Admin privileges on the more expensive computers, but I will see that she's got admin privileges on this new one, as it is well and truly hers, not on loan from me. But I don't understand why I couldn't login as an admin on the old computer. It must have totally thought that I was trying to jack it, as she's been borrowing this machine for more than a year, and I haven't logged on in that entire time.
I ended up having to use her phone to get her logged into iCloud on the new machine, and I'm not sure yet that all of her information has transferred over. I went into the old machine to make sure that Mail and Safari settings, etc. were all synced to the cloud (they hadn't been for a while). Pain! I pay for a 2 TB cloud account for all of my family members on Apple devices, but not all of them use it.
I left the old Air there because my sister's not even going to pick it up for another two weeks. By leaving it there, if there is anything not working the way Mom wants it to, hopefully she can figure out what she still has on the old computer that she wants on the new one. Or, I can go back over and figure it out. I will take a data cable next time.
I'm not sure what we're going to do for antivirus/anti-malware? I'm also not sure yet if certain iPhone apps work on the Neo.
I had both #ClamXav and #MalwareBytes on the Air because this woman can download crap malware from China faster than you can blink your eyes. She doesn't even know how she does it. I also remain shocked at how filthy her computers get. She told me that it's her cat's fault?!?! Omgs.
I would like it if Disconnect Privacy Pro worked on the Neo, since I wasn't able to use that on any of the M series machines. I'm hoping the A18 iPhone chip will allow that? But I don't know yet.
The Neo is actually pretty cool! It's slightly smaller, it's a little bit lighter in weight, and she got the blue one, which is a really nice color that clearly nobody wants because she was able to order it and get it in one day (I'm hearing that the citrus and the blush color are both backordered).
I think the screen is brighter than the 2020 Air. That was kind of surprising! Now I kind of wish that I had taken my '25 Air over both so that my 2020 might've recognized me and so I could've compared all three.
One really cute thing is, I had her change her background to a picture of a humpback whale, and then when I changed her screensaver to the whale one, this happened: when you're actually working on the computer, the background is static, but if you start the screensaver, it starts from exactly where the whale is in the picture and then it starts moving. Then, when you click out of the screensaver, the whale freezes in that position. I have got to try that on my Air!
I actually like the feel of the trackpad on the Neo and I like the feel and look of the keys. They don't light up, but all of them are larger, including the power off/touch ID key. The gaps between them seem smaller than on the 2020 machine, too.
It's really tempting to think about getting one of these just to mess around with and for EDC, but I don't really want a blue one. π€£
