A good overview of the ongoing effort to keep the Mississippi in check. What is not made clear is that the Corps of Engineers was in the middle of a study to update the nearly century old hydraulic analysis on how to manage river flows, but that effort was halted by the Trump regime and the Republican Congress. Until that work is resumed and completed the dangers will persist and grow.

Mississippi River spillways have kept Louisiana dry and safe. That may no longer be enough.
The infrastructure along the Mississippi River has long protected the New Orleans area from catastrophic flooding. But a list of concerns are converging, particularly involving the Mississippi Gulf Coast. “We don’t control that Mississippi River. If it’s not managed correctly, it can be catastrophic.”
People I know in San Francisco despise these things. As a civil engineer, I am skeptical that human and autonomous operated vehicles can safely coexist on the streets of any city. #CivilEningeering #NOLA
