Rafael Behr makes the powerful point that once (if) the assisted dying bill becomes law, and before implementation of safeguards & the allowance of the choice to seek an assisted death is formally legalised, there is a space for a citizens jury to explore how the safeguards should be formulated & focussed.

He also rightly suggests this would have been better earlier in the process of deliberation, bu we are where we are.

MPs will vote, but there is a better way to decide who has the right to die

In an age of cynicism and mistrust, politicians must work harder to involve the public in difficult decisions, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

What is being talked of is a #WellbeingEconomy but 2100 is too late, it has to rapidly progress now!

@NICW #Wales needs to give the #WFGAct independent, statutory legal teeth at a local authority & national level now by utilising participatory democracy #CitizensJuries

Across the (developed) world, #citizensjuries have become more common in the last decades.

Having sat (recently) on a trial jury himself, Martin Wolf (FT) is now a convert, arguing that many contentious #political issues wold benefits from the input of a citizen jury.

Certainly, they would start to balance the over-representation of the interests of the wealthy in today's political systems (not least the UK).

They'd be a good for our #democracy but the Q. is who would champion them today?

🥳 Congratulations to
Katie Hirono who passed her PhD viva on Friday with no corrections 🎉

The thesis was examined by Prof. John Boswell (University of Southampton) & Prof Sarah Cunnigham-Burley (University of Edinburgh), and supervised by Dr Ellen Stewart (University of Strathclyde) and I.
