Meanwhile, back in Scandinavia, there is also diamond dust and extreme cold...
I left Antarctica only a week ago and it already feels far away and a long time ago.
But even here I can enjoy the fascination of atmospheric physics.
It's extremely cold in Scandinavia and we have diamond dust during the day too.

Winter light, fleeting magic ✨
Just as the sun dipped behind the ridge, the light did something unexpected. A soft glow pushed through the clouds, and for a brief moment a rare circumzenithal arc, an upside-down smile of pure color, appeared over the snowy peaks.

It didn’t last long. Just enough time to remind me why being patient in the cold is always worth it. These quiet, in-between moments are the ones I remember most. ❄️

Here’s to a day full of unexpected beauty. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to today?

Ice Halos by Moonlight

An almost full moon on April 15 brought these luminous apparitions to a northern spring night over Alberta Canada. On that night, bright moonlight refracted and reflected by hexagonal ice crystals in high clouds created a complex of halos and arcs more commonly seen by sunlight in daytime skies.

First time I saw circumzenithal arc ("upside down rainbow") - and this at QTH (you can see my ZS6BKW also on the photo).

I missed the meteor this week, but at least got to see a combined atmospheric phenomenon this morning at the beach.

Thanks to @WDEFNews12 viewer Tom Scott for a view of a #CircumzenithalArc from #TellicoPlainsTN --- our @LangleyRoofing #WeatherWindow #PictureOfTheDay for Wednesday.
30th Aug '23 was an amazing night for lunar #AtmosphericOptics around the #PerigeeFullMoon! Lunar #22DegreeHalo #CircumzenithalArc + the best #paraselenae (#moondogs) I've seen, both showing #ParaselenicCircle fragments! Canon 1100D + 10-18mm lens. Click image to view full size

On 17th July '23 I saw the best #CircumzenithalArc I've ever seen! There was also a faint hint of a #SupralateralArc which showed up on colour subtracted images. The 1st image has the top of a #22DegreeHalo. Taken from #NorthOxfordshire #AtmosphericOptics #OpticalEffects
