By the doorway 玄関 are 3 of my local treasures. The dry wood that is suprisingly incredibly hard to split (this sort of tree should be easy, but it must have been sucked dry by an invasive species or insects years ago...) has such beautiful patterns and colorings once the bark is off. I usually only notice and think to set it somewhere for contemplations when I'm overwhelmed by the amount of work I should get done sawing, splitting, and stacking wood before the next rain or the next time we need more of the parking area... with trees and animals you have to treat as distractions most of your mystical sort of "Sense Of Wonder" moments or you'll never get anything done. But in spite of all that this little hunk of almost-split wood ended up on display where I can notice it every once in a while along with the cinnamon wood sculpture done my a nice art teacher. Sometimes I take him chunks of wood that seem too awesomely special to just be firewood, I wasn't sure if I was doing him any favors: it took him months to make a head out of a big hunk of Magnolia trunk. But I guess he appreciates it because he gave me this torso made from one of the chunks of cinnamon tree. In between is the record (and it's wonderful cover) of a local folk-punk band, NanBuShiki.. NanBuShiki (Southern Style, South Method,....) is more than a band, they are a festival. A chance discovery on my part, they are now a large part of my appreciation and enjoyment of South Kyushu.. I'm excited to think of going to their next big event (an annual event I do my best not to miss!) the Miyakonojyo HomeTown Night Market #ふるさと夜市 。 This year's festival on July 19th and 20th it is also called Ge Ge Ge No GeiNouSai, the Geh Geh Geh Talents Festival?? I included an image of the event's poster in this album...It will be enlivening/invigoration to dance, sweat and talk here.

This Monday morning, I was on my way out the door and struck by the way the sunlight came in. I had to take photos Bob Marley singing "Rise and take your stance again." came to mind as a way to encourage others dealing with Monday Morning. Once again I mistakenly think of the lines as coming from the song "Rat Race" but the lines are from the song "Heathen." I probably remember the lines from listening to the CD "Babylon By Bus" so many times when I have to drive a car...

The way the morning sun lit up the cinnamon wood sculpture stopped me. It's a plus that the sculpture happens to be next to a record cover from the great local band NanBuShiki. The art teacher here at Minami Kyushu University made the sculpture from a cinnamon wood I got from the 82 year old neighbor who is my wood stove buddy now. This wood came from a tree that was in his hard. It grew over and around wires that held swings for his kids. I still haven't sawed and axed a way around the wire to get pieced for the stove.

But working with big trees makes me want to commemorate at least one small part of it. The art teacher carved a head out of a big hung of magnolia trunk. I don't think I can keep taking up his time with these interesting pieces of wood though, I guess I should learn to carve myself, but I'm barely keeping up with the sawing and chopping..

I have to take the sculpture the the wood stove buddy neighbor. I probably can't give it to him since it was a gift to me, but I'd like to hare it somehow.

Some beautiful red wood in this cinnamon tree. I feel bad not being ready to make something more lasting than firewood out of some of this.. The art teacher carved a head out of a big section of Magnolia last year but doesn't need a big chunk of cinammon this year. I should try to find the family that does workshops to make wooden spoons with all sorts of different woods, They had neat stuff on display at the Kagoshima Organic festival. One day I'll have to get set up for wood working. I wonder how cinnamon does on a lathe? Makiing one of those two-ringed rattles out of this wood would smell nice. The little parking area smells of cinnamon now. It is a lot of work to split. Usually I can put the ax in the middle of a section then work the split with the hammer, but this wood just bounce the ax right back up. You can't go right for the center you have to split off flat sections from the outside and work your way around: precision practice to split the long, narrow pieces later... At one point the read wood made me feel like I was dressing a wild boar or something with red meat. Maybe the color and my feeling fooled the Silky hen that came over to help for a bit too, but it's probably the same hen that recently got a newt and worm feast right near the ax..
