Book Review: "Privacy's Defender" by Cindy Cohn

For those who grew up outside the early hacker scene, there's an entire parallel world history that we missed out on. This is one reason I'm a big fan of podcasts like Darknet Diaries and Firewalls Don't Stop Dragons, and nonfiction books such as Permanent Record and The Age of

The New Oil

"The good guys throw better parties than the bad guys" - Cindy Cohn

- who also, among many other great points, speaks to the fact that those of us with some sort of resources, perhaps because we aren't currently in the crosshairs of any of these horrible assaults on personal safety & privacy, have no choice but to fight for those who are.

Basically, what world do you want to live in?

In one hour, catch our interview with Cindy Cohn, EFF's outgoing Executive Director and prolific civil liberties attorney in the fight for digital rights.

Her first major case with the EFF, Bernstein v. United States, established the "right to code" and dismantled the USA's unconstitutional ban on encryption exports, paving the way for people to develop technologies like PGP and other strong encryption tools without having to register as an "arms dealer" and face government restrictions on publishing their ideas.

In her career since she's represented many historic cases: suing AT&T for secretly collaborating with the NSA (Hepting v. AT&T), Sony for installing malware DRM, a vote machine company abusing copyright law to silence criticism, the DVD Copy Control Association attacking freedom of speech, and many other fights against the NSA and for internet freedom.

Cohn has been with @eff for over 30 years, and succeeded Shari Steele to become EFF's Executive Director in 2015. Our interview discusses her works and legacy, the origins of the EFF, and the still-ongoing fight for privacy and digital liberties 💪

#CindyCohn from the @eff was on #TheDailyShow this week. It was really good and she even mentioned @Mastodon. But they disagreed re dealing with corporate social media platform harms. Her concern being to avoid censorship while Jon was arguing that just limiting the algos was not censorship. I think the fedi is the answer to this conundrum. I think a law against them could be constitutional, but I think true decentralization makes them unworkable anyway.

Attorney Cindy Cohn talks to Jon Stewart about her new book, “Privacy’s Defender: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance,” and her work as executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is the world’s biggest and oldest digital rights organization. She recounts the fight against sweeping government surveillance after 9/11, her reservations about internet regulations backfiring if placed in the wrong hands, and why the solution to these problems is a combination of comprehensive privacy law, revised business models of giant tech companies who make money off of user data, and more platform choices for individuals. “A world where there are five big media companies that decide everything that we see and how we see it… the answer isn’t to try to take a dictator and make them a better dictator. The answer is to get rid of the dictators and make them less important.”
