I came up with this bit of contrasts IMM: wet vs. dry, still vs moving. Light.

I got very wet this day, with its own contrasts, floods on one side of a street or park, and torrential rain on the other.

Cuba

Cuba is a country frozen in time, with both blessings and challenges, people living each day one at a time, and enjoying life in a society with "2 sides of the coin". Influenced by centuries of Spanish & French colonial rule, African and Western culture, plus sugar, rum, tobacco and music, as I often heard, "it's complicated". And colorful. Here are some images of Cuba today, or yesterday, or for the past 60 years. These are from some of Cuba's provincial jewels to the South (Cienfuegos & Trinidad) along with some sights and sounds of iconic Havana, old, new, and in between.

Backpacking trip in 2008 (November/December)
For our final destination in 2008 we spent a month in Cuba. Our journey took us from Havanna to Santiago de Cuba to Trinidad to Cienfuegos and finally for the last days of our journey to Varadero.

Cuba was an interesting country and full of contradictions. Tourists were ripped off from all pennies possible and also we were denied the use of local bus companies etc. But we met some wonderful people too when we stayed in casa particulares (rooms for rent in people's houses) and ate in paladares (restaurants kept by locals).

Cars and scenery were beautiful, food in paladares and casa particulares was good. Weather wonderful.

We went to Varadero to an all inclusive resort for the last 5 days of our journey just to relax before going back home and experienced our first actual culture shock. The contradiction was too massive for all the places we had been in and the lifestyle we had had for the last 9 months that it was messing with our heads. Luckily we realised what was going on and were able to put things in perspective.

From Cuba we went back home for Christmas.

Happy Weekend!

If you're in NYC a good Saturday morning to sleep in, as another superstorm is set to slice through. Reminded of rainy days, I recalled a deluge in Trinidad, Cuba.

Thinking of deluges, one of the more memorable for me was on Plaza Mayor, in Trinidad, Cuba.
