Nicholas Whyte: How Christopher Priest wrote for Doctor Who, and what happened next

"It’s not all that interesting. I disliked the Dr Who programme from the outset, and still do. Towards the end of the 1970s I was approached by Douglas Adams, who was trying to talk “real” sf writers into writing for the series. I said, “Thanks, but no thanks”, but we enjoyed talking to each other so I went in and met him for a boozy lunch."

How Christopher Priest wrote for Doctor Who, and what happened next

“a loathsome little BBC hack who had aspirations above his abilities.”

From the Heart of Europe

Inverted World (The Inverted World in some editions) is a 1974 science fiction novel by British writer Christopher Priest (1943–2024).

In the novel, an entire city and its residents travel slowly across a supposedly alien planet on railway tracks. The city's engineers lay track ahead of the city, reusing old track the city has crossed over. Many people are unaware that the city is even moving. A crisis ensues as its population decreases, the people grow unruly, and an obstacle looms ahead. - Wikipedia

One of the best and weirdest sci-fi novels I have ever read. A world that appears to be impossible is credibly explained in an excellent twist at the end. I was gripped from the opening words: "'I had reached the age of 650 miles,'"

RIP Christopher Priest.

I attended the CASA (Comic Arts San Antonio) for a little while yesterday as part of my job at Gotham Newsstand. I guess the best known guests were #ChristopherPriest , #TerryKavanagh and Nick Pitarrra but the spotlight was on more local indie creators. This thread shows jut a few I talked to.

#FinishedReading this truly original story of 19th century magicians and the strange legacies they leave for their 20th century descendants. Their twisted deceptions lead to some pretty remarkable sentences: "I apologise if I think I was deceiving me, and meant no harm". #ChristopherPriest #Bookstodon @bookstodon

So I'm finding a lot of more recent #ComicBooks hard to follow. For instance, I'm reading the #ChristopherPriest #Deathstroke comics which came highly recommended, and it's not that they're bad—I just read a wonderful little bit with Slade & Batman trying to outsmart each other that was *chef's kiss*. Batman and Slade both doing what they do best: being badasses, but *smart* badasses.

But I find myself having to go back to pages and try to puzzle out what's happening and who's talking to whom.

A boy will travel back and forth in time to talk to the girl of his dreams. It's "Palely Loitering" by Christopher Priest, from the January 1979 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction!
