I may have raved about Christine Lavin before, the New York folk singer-songwriter who can go back and forth between light-hearted and heart-wrenching with equal ease. This is closer to the latter, as she wrestles with whether or not to pursue a long-distance romance with an unlikely partner. (Of course, it may not be autobiographical, but if it is, it probably lines up with half a dozen other songs on later albums...)

Musical Interlude: OK, so I went to a baseball game today, a Board of Directors outing that was also a bit of an early birthday party for me. I ate too much, got bored, joked about touchdowns and such, and ended up leaving early (but not the first). I tried to think of baseball-oriented songs that I didn't hate (yes, I dislike "Center Field" and "Talkin' Baseball," and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" should be buried with a stake through its heart...), but then i remembered this song, which is technically about softball, but still, it echoes my experiences of being a non-athletic kid roped into team sports...ugh...
