Why are slaughterhouses not celebrated? Because slaughterhouses reveal the truth most people would rather not face. Societies celebrate meals, traditions, and profits, but hide the violence required to produce them. If slaughter were morally comfortable, it would not need walls, euphemisms, and distance. Its concealment is part of the argument against it.

For WDYS, Sadje offers us a photo by Rita Daisy (Unsplash) of a solitary man standing before a floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at a bright city skyline from the dim interior of a high-rise room.
As always, Sadje is eagerly awaiting our responses!
Sijo?
A Korean verse form related to haiku and tanka and comprised of three lines of 14-16 syllables each, for a total of 44-46 syllables. Each line contains a pause near the middle, similar to a caesura, though the break need not be metrical. The first half of the line contains six to nine syllables; the second half should contain no fewer than five. Originally intended as songs, sijo can treat romantic, metaphysical, or spiritual themes. Whatever the subject, the first line introduces an idea or story, the second supplies a “turn,” and the third provides closure. Modern sijo are sometimes printed in six lines.
Let’s write poetry together!
When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
–Ben Harper (b. 1969)Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

It must be #time...
Time to be #awake, woke, not a sleepy coffee-addled drone zzz... #serf?
But is it?
- I sleep more than an ageing fluff-ball cat but then I am an #elderly senile.
- Being awake on the #cyberverse is enough to send any maturity to #sleep. Try doom scrolling for nightmare or social media scrolling for sheep substitutes
- Before the inter-web was a thing, we created #meaningful bubbles and life #choices (remember choice)
For example:
1) I could eat Islamic hash browns without being questioned by the thought police.
2) I could #read #banned books at school or obtain them from the adult 'reserved' section of the local #libraries
3) Being #different, diffident or daffy was perfectly #normalised
Fortunately our youthies are now in contact worldwide. #Micro-blogging is now a Mastodon speciality. #Citizen science is almost a requirement. The future is bright. The future is a tangent tangerine.

How can we build connection and engagement with the people with whom we work? By giving up control over the choices they're offered.
