New agricultural method replaces traditional jhum in the crowded hills of Bangladesh.
The Traditional Jhum Practice in Bangladesh
Jhum, a traditional itinerant farming practice, has long been a common practice among farmers in the Chittagong hills of Southeast Bangladesh. However, in recent years, the increasing demand for arable land and declining yields have pushed many farmers to abandon jhum for more profitable crops. Among the new practices adopted, the cultivation of vegetables through the machan method—the use of bamboo trellises to grow climbing plants—is gaining popularity, thanks to its ability to ensure profits and reduce soil erosion.
Milan Tanchangya, a 43-year-old farmer, is harvesting cucumbers from his field, where cucumber and bitter gourd plants climb on bamboo trellises, swaying gently in the wind. Only a few years ago, this area was used for the traditional jhum practice, a multi-crop cultivation method of the indigenous communities of the region. With the decline in yields, however, Milan had to seek new solutions to maintain his family of seven people.
