If you haven't heard, sadly, #ChirpSocial, one of the popular #ActivityPub βgroupsβ platform, is shutting down βprobablyβ on February 29th.
In an email they sent to admins, the owner and developer can no longer support https://chirp.social financially as they failed to find a new job after they were laid off by #Google last year.
So, if you have a Chirp.Social groups, either move to #Guppe (https://a.gup.pe) (as suggested by Chirp.Social), or if I may, to #FediaIO (https://fedia.io), an #Mbin [flagship] instance.
This reminds us the importance of having a built-in groups feature, and one where the groups feature actually federates.
Back in 2008, when the #Fediverse was born, we did have a built-in federated groups in #Laconica / #StatusNet (today known as #GNUsocial). We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.
Today, we have #Friendica and #Hubzilla (as well as #Streams-based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It's just a matter of finding an instance that's open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.
That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?

Mima-samaThis is why I find following hashtags of very generic terms to be useless. "Gemini" can refer to the protocol, an astrology sign, or a recent ML project by Google. #FediverseGroups like #Guppe and #ChirpSocial is a solution to this problem.

Right now, it is too easy to pollute a timeline of a hashtag. Im specifically thinking of the hashtag gemini to refer to gemini websites. This has been hijacked by Google gemini. In particular I find posts that use an excessive amount of hashtags annoying. Servers needs to have a rule about #RightOfWay. Google dont get to hijack small communities. #fediverse #smolweb #gemini

Now the question is, how would a #group #boost look like from a Masto user's perspective? Because #Guppe and #ChirpSocial make their #boosts invisible (or at least try to make it invisible) to the OP (it will appear in the boost count but the OP will/should not get a notification).
It's like there's a reason we created a separate #fediverse software specifically for #groups... β

Ka Takane@silverhuang I just wish #GoToSocial support relays and #guppe and #chirpsocial federate properly with GTS by allowing people from GTS instances to follow groups. It's such a hopeless situation if you want to federate with many people...
@silverhuang Hey, operator of @shiguma here. You don't have to do anything anymore, I've decided to just take down the autobooster for good.
Anyway what the bot does is follow every #guppe and #chirpsocial group (or at least every group makai.chaotic.ninja has seen), and then just boost everything the group boosts so that my #GoToSocial instance at kishinjou.chaotic.ninja can see them in the federated timeline. So not all your posts are boosted, just the ones which mention group accounts.
