I know a lot about #chiropractic and think the true believers in that community far outnumber scammers. I know a little about #naturopathy, and given how they often have to source their treatments, I have difficulty imagining how they couldn't be aware of the potential harm they do to their patients. But #acupuncture, I just don‘t know if they mostly know they do nothing of value, or if they’re mostly true believers.

Retconning Acupuncture - NeuroLogica Blog

Understanding, at a deep level, the differences between legitimate science and pseudoscience is increasingly critical in our modern world. Science, in my opinion, is perhaps the most powerful tool humans have collectively developed for understanding the universe in which we find ourselves. (I would clarify that it is complementary with philosophy which is important to

Reading more posts about autistic kids’ needs, that resonate for adults too. I realise why I’m perhaps not just tired when it comes to the 90 minute journey, each way, for a 20 minute chiropractor appointment.

I’ve done it for five years, the first three being twice a week. The last year, I’ve made it less often, having to cancel quite often since I had such a fatigue flare all year (thanks, diabetes. It has improved some now).

Not going for a few months again, I’ve got stiffer, though using my Thumper helps surprisingly well for some of it. I’ve also got my old chiropractor who’s a lot closer.

Sitting at the PC again, back soon stiffened up more and has me more tired. Maybe the magnesium too, idk (or I’m just more relaxed).

A somewhat amusing review of the latest literature on practices of "subluxation-adjusting wackaloons" (i.e., chiropractors):

Not amusing, though, are the instances like those of coronary artery dissection and quadriplegia following chiropractic manipulations.

Finally got to the chiropractor yesterday after two and a half months of being too tired to face the journey (it’s not across town, but down, still it’s a four-hour round trip. It’s a rarer method that works for me).

I’m fairly stable and have been for a while, which is nice after four years of going to this one, the first three years mostly going twice a week. On top of 12 years of the previous one, after two years of a few others (and the jury’s still out on whether I’m hypermobile because what on earth else is behind such a mess).

I stopped at Popeye’s for snacks, not having managed to bring my own (finished my small bag of baby carrots and already had the portable boiled eggs). Despite the less diabetic-friendly coating, all the walking must have helped as my sugar was the lowest when I got home - 6.2.

Body wasn’t too bad for such a gap in treatment (same in January after 6 weeks off). Head felt a little looser and clearer, as I’d hoped, and lower back good.

“First, individual treatment is only helpful if the factors on which you are individualizing the treatment are real. Homeopathic treatments can be ‘individualized’ but based entirely on fantasy.” — Dr. Steven Novella

Novella does not mention #chiropractic here, which TCIM also includes. One of my familial embarrassments is my brother who has practiced chiropractic for over 40 years. The other familial embarrassment is that my other brother is a Trump supporter. Family are friends who have been forced on you.

On the other hand, when my daughter was four, she told me at the grocery store that Santa can’t possibly be real. I thought, “Well, this is promising.”

WHO On Traditional Medicine

Recently the World Health Organization published their guidelines on traditional medicine, actually referring to the category of "traditional, complementary and integrative medicine (TCIM) practices.

While it’s debatable how much good chiropractic adjustments are doing for your body—there’s some evidence that it alleviates lower back pain, alongside a litany of unsubstantiated claims—what’s not debatable is the number of anti-vax, pseudoscience-prone chiropractors clogging the conspirituality pi
