The Chinese Exclusion Act is history I didn't live but can't ignore
As a first-generation Chinese immigrant, Yundong Zou felt a disconnect between his lineage and the dark history of Canada's Chinese Exclusion Act. But a visit to a museum exhibit revealed to him that "history isn’t just for those who bear its scars," he writes.

A landmark citizenship case was decided by the #SCOTUS on #ThisDayInHistory in 1898. #Chinese migration had ended with the #ChineseExclusionAct in 1882 and those who were here were deemed ineligible for citizenship, but #USvWongKimArk determined that their children were citizens.

The #racist #ChineseExclusionAct of 1882 was finally repealed on #ThisDayInHistory in 1943, owing in part to America's wartime alliance with #China in #WWII. This allowed Chinese #immigrants, and those descended from workers who came in the 19th c., finally to become US citizens.
